Greetings fellow hosting enthusiasts,

Following the success and positive feedback over the past 12 months since the launch of our Ryzen VPS hosting, and with the official release of the highly anticipated 9000 series now complete, we are excited to invite interested MyBB users to participate in an exclusive beta test for the next generation of VPS hosting in South Africa.

We're seeking volunteers to help us evaluate the performance of our latest VPS offering, based on the latest Zen5 AMD Ryzen platform.

We believe this to be Africa's fastest VPS server, and you can find benchmark results below.

What We’re Offering:
  • Free Linux VPS with your preferred distribution.
  • Free access until 1 October 2024.
  • One VPS per MyBB user.
This is a unique opportunity to experience cutting-edge performance firsthand and we appreciate any feedback to help us refine our service before the official launch.

How to Participate:

Simply reply to this thread, and we’ll reach out to you via DM.

Please note that newly registered MyBB accounts (less than 30 days old) are excluded from the beta to prevent abuse

I would love to test it but not sure what I would "test" apart from running pings 24/7.

Which part(s) of this service are physically present in SA and are there any components that are hosted abroad?

Thanks, @Rackzar , for the opportunity. I've done all the testing I can, and below is my experience:

I received a message with a sign-up link and a discount code for the VPS. The sign-up process was quick and efficient. Rackzar supports PayPal, which is not the norm in South Africa, so that's a nice perk. The portal is clean, efficient, and works well.

After signing up, I received a few emails (Welcome, Invoice, Order Confirmation, Payment Confirmation, and VPS is Ready at 10:51 AM). However, when I attempted to connect to the server using the details provided in the email, the server was still being deployed. I ran a continuous ping to the IP supplied, and after 9 minutes, the server became reachable. While this is quite a long setup time for a VPS, I assume this will improve after the beta phase.

The client area displays the usual virtual machine stats (CPU, RAM, IP, etc.) and control buttons (Start/Stop/Reboot/Reinstall, etc.). I’ll attach a picture of the client area below. I also wanted to test the support, so I noted that the client area wasn’t reporting disk usage. I used this as an opportunity to create a support ticket.

The ticket was created at 11:57 and was answered by a friendly and helpful staff member. They informed me that "we're aware of the issue you're seeing with disk usage reporting in the panel. Currently, our panel doesn't support reporting on disk usage because the QEMU agent doesn't provide this data. We’re working on hiding this feature from the panel to avoid any confusion in the future. In the meantime, you can safely ignore the disk usage information in the panel, as it isn't supported by our system."

In terms of connection, the server was solid, providing a stable 11-12ms latency from my home. It uses a shared 1Gbit port (though I’m unsure how many users share it). I tested both upload and download speeds:

  • Uploading files from the server to my home, I averaged around 80MB/s (peak: 92MB/s), which is impressive for a shared link.
  • Uploading files to a 10Gbit Leaseweb server in the Netherlands was a different story, with speeds averaging only 12.6MB/s (peak: 15MB/s).
When pulling files from international sources using wget, I observed similar results to pulling the same file from my home server (tested simultaneously): around 60MB/s for international and about 80MB/s for local traffic.

Here are some benchmark results I ran immediately after logging into the server:

I also wanted to test a modded Minecraft server, but unfortunately, the RAM wasn’t sufficient, and the server crashed upon launch due to running out of memory. I then tried a non-modded Minecraft server, and the results were excellent. World generation was smooth, and there were no tick issues. However, I would recommend choosing a package with more RAM, as RAM usage was consistently high even with only a single player connected.

Thanks once again for the opportunity, You can go ahead and suspend my VM to give the others a chance, as I've done all the testing with the available VM resources I can.

Edit : forgot to mention in the client area there is a link to https://status.rackzar.com/ under the support tab on the left, that link doesn't work.

Edit 2 : @Rackzar upgraded my server specs and boy this server is powerful as hell! New benchmarks :
