I try to keep on track with all the posts and settings on iBurst, but I have totally lost it. Is there a forum or website called iBurst For Dummies? There is quite a few questions I have:

1. All my settings are correct to use utTracestar, but still no joy to connect.
2. How the heck will I know which MTU setting is best for my set-up?
3. How do you ping and what benefits / info will you gain from it?

I guess that is about it for now. Maybe I will be clever soon.......:D

We all have to start somewhere...

1.Have you tried resetting the UTD, power off / on?

2.1352 should do, if not read on. “MTU defines the largest data packet size you can transmit in one go across a network. Messages larger than the MTU are divided into smaller packets before being sent. If your MTU is low, then it will take more packets to transmit the same amount of data as a higher-valued MTU, so taking more time.”

3.To establish the highest value, go to your iBurst dial-up connection, right click it, go to status, click the details tab, and note the Server IP address. Open a CMD window, type ping -f -l 1372 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX – Server IP address. Reduce the value 1372 by 10 until you no longer receive this message “Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.” Then increase it by 1 until you receive the message again. Take the value before the message was displayed again and add 28, that is the highest MTU value for your connection.

Maby this should ne added to the newbie/technical thread.

1. Do you have a new black modem? If not you should be able to get it working, you can get help from the developers (Seburn) from the UTts stickie on this forum.

2. You do a ping with bigger and bigger packets until it can get no bigger without fragmenting. But a good automated program that can do this for you and can set your MTU and optimal settings is TCP Optmizer, google it.

3. Ping by opening a command prompt (Start -> run type "cmd") and you type ping followed by the site you want to ping into the command prompt. You can add "-n" followed by the amount of times you want to ping for to get results of more than 4.

You will know how fast your connection can connect to a site/server by doing this. So its like a performance test for latency. if in CPT the best results come from myadsl.co.za and in JHB iburst.co.za

Thanks Gavin, ou helped me the most...ha-ha-ha. I'm sure I am going to get this right tonight. I might come back to this thread sometime tonight to tell you all what my ping and all other results are so that you can tell me if it is good or bad.

I remember there is one more problem. I know the dashboard only works when you are connected with USB and utTracestar with the other cable (ethernet, is it?). But my usage meter is dead. I re-installed my driver and dashboard but it is still dead. Anybody else experienced this type of problem?

OK, seriously, this one will be my last question.....for now. ome users say they are connected to tower A, but when there are a lot of users on that tower then they connect to tower B. Do you connect to another tower manually by moving your modem or is there something in utTracestar taht you can change to another tower?

In a fe months form now, I will be in a position to assist all the new users. Watch me!

Your modem moves you onto another tower automatically. You cant change it...

Sometimes this isnt desirable though, as the other tower might have worse signal or load, so people buy a directional antenna which only sees in one direction and therefore forces your modem to connect to the tower which is best.

not sure about the dashboard etc. as I dont use that stuff.. but btw, you can connect to UTtracestar via both USB or "the other one" which is Ethernet.

Why not just use the sites bandwidth meter? but I assume that would be dead too... Your usage will usualy only update once you disconnect the modem btw. SO it might not chnage for a few days if you dont disconnect yourself.

Hi there EHV

This one is for you, don't neglect to tell the user to delete the dashboard crap.

Lol, ja already done it.. kind of. I dont even know how that dash board stuff looks. Maby just telling him to get rid of it would have been better, problem solved right away :p

Lol, ja. You went the more technical route though :p

But you still only have 92 posts.. is that right? I guess you only post in the iBurst forum then.. n00b.

No interest in the other...

Yeah you right, n00b I am, LOL - but I have no interest in the other forums, iBurst has issues to resolve, and its kinda new territory, therefore interesting and enlightening.

Also, I have four connections going for VPN’s, so it’s best to keep my ears on the ground.
