DStv boycott calls because of new streaming restrictions

DStv is facing a backlash from South Africans, including calls for a boycott, after it announced changes to its streaming service to fight password sharing and piracy.

DStv announced that from 22 March 2022, its subscribers will be limited to streaming DStv on one device at a time.

Not defending Dstv but they could easily solve / capitalise off simultaneous streaming - like an extra R20 or R50 to have an additional viewer for a max of 2 or 3 extra viewers per account. More than that, I agree, you're probably bullshitting and sharing with your buddies.

DSTV aren't wrong in trying to limit account sharing..
The way they're going about it is just fscking stupid, there are many other ways of doing it that are way more subtle and potentially even more effective.

This is how you make a very profitable company go broke.
Just give the subscribers a raw deal. This will cause many to cancel or seek other alternatives.
I just hope ICASA is making notes as regulations need to be made around this and the Competition commission needs to come in to see market abuse of power in action. If anything they should allow more logins for same account with a max being 4.

My brother and I watch a single channel 303 (the cricket, rugby and F1 channels have become completely unaffordable) and stream when we are not at home. R429/month. Already been too high a convenience fee. Moving on.

To try and limit the inconvenience to their customers, they could still allow multiple streams from the same IP address, so that those in the same household can still stream on multiple devices. This is not a full solve, but it would lessen the number of customers who are inconvenienced.
