can an ipad air get internet via its usb connection to a mac computer?

The family just got an ipad air. Updating to the latest os update (8 something from 7 something) was fine via itunes and downloaded via the computers wired internet connection. Setting it up however it needs to have a wireless or cell connection. Is it not possible for the ipad to connect to the internet via the cable it charges on and just got its software update from? It is cell capable but have not bought a sim yet.

yes but in different distant room :/ The wifi is not great either. Shame one cant update apps whiles tethered. It seems dare I say it a design oversight by Apple...*taunt* ('cept I bought one...)

You can update and install apps, as well as iOS, on the pc via iTunes.

You can use an iPhone's 3G connection and set it up as a hotspot
