So I was in KZN two months ago, and since my ID was damaged I decided to apply for a reissue. I'm back In Gauteng and just received notification that my iD is ready for collection. Can someone on my behalf collect it for me? They have that slip you get after applying. Should be possible, I think... Is it?

Usually you require a signed letter stating that you hereby authorise so-and-so to collect it on your behalf.

Pretty sure you can't do it. They need fingerprint verification.

Not possible. They refuse to hand over the ID unless you verify by supplying your thumbprint. Source: got my new ID today.

According to the signs at Home Affairs; no. Not possible on IDs. Passports, Birth Certificates, etc; yes.

Still not sure why a phone call is considered a less lazy option than typing a question on a forum...

Biometric fingerprint verification is required upon collection for passport or id. Just reaffirming.

Yes, that was what the family member with the passport issue (thread a few weeks ago) was told. You have to collect an ID in person, but you have 6 years to collect.
