Can HSDPA/3G card be used as a phone?

I have 3G/HSDPA access via a PCMCIA card on my laptop. I have a SIM and the Vodaphone desktop software allows me to send and receive SMSs etc.

Is there any software that can allow me to use the SIM card via my laptop to make and receive "cellphone" calls, instead of actually placing the SIM into a mobile handset?

Vodafone toyed with an application like this about a year ago. It could also make video calls.

But it got canned and we never saw anything else like it.

I believe the Huawei dashboard supports it for their own cards?

Skype works very well but tends to eat up your bandwidth rather rapidly!

Or we can charge the R10/Mb for VoIP as originally lodged with ICASA! :)

All the data cards will be able to make Voice / Video calls, but you'll need some software to do it. I'm surprised there's not an open source project working on it. As said before, Vodafone dropped it from the VMC roadmap.
