I cut my micro SIM down to Nano SIM for my new phone without backing up the Whatsapp messages.

Can I just copy the Whatsapp folder onto the correct place on the new phone?

Or will I have to buy and Rica a new micro SIM, put it in the old phone, back up the messages and then restore?

Samsung offers Smart Switch which copies contents of one device to another so I expected Whatsapp messages to be transferred but they weren't :(

Tks

It is done for you automatically...provided you activated Google drive. I am assuming you are moving form Android to android. It is tricky if you are moving across platforms.

There should be a folder on the phone, assuming Android, that you can copy...

To restore a less recent local backup

Your phone will store up to the last 7 days worth of local backup files (Google Drive will only have the most recent). If you wish to restore a local backup which is not the most recent, you will need to do the following:

Download a file manager. Here are some choices: File Managers and Explorers.
In the File Manager, navigate to sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. If your data is not stored on the SD card, you may see internal storage or main storage instead of sdcard.
Rename the backup file you wish to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It is possible that your earlier backup may have been on an earlier protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Do not change the number of the crypt extension.
Uninstall WhatsApp.
Install WhatsApp.
Tap Restore when asked

Or just connect the old phone to wifi and then back up your whatsapp to your google account using the whatsapp chat options in whatsapp itself....then when you install and activate whatsapp on your new phone it will ask you if you want ro restore.

You can't copy the database file unless the device is rooted. What you actually want to do is copy the backup file from storage, and then choose the restore option on the new phone. Google for "whatsapp backup restore" if you get stuck.

@ngwe23 didn't use Google Drive :(

@NorthPole looked at that but it's when you have only one device, I'd like to transfer from one android phone to another.

@falcon786 Whatsapp won't load without a SIM card.

@mister is this what I should do - copy msgstore.db.crypt12 from original device to same location on new device?

Just copy whole whatsapp folder from one phone to the next in the same place. Install whatsapp. When asked to restore backup say yes. Done

Edit: try the next post first.

Just get a nano to micro sim adapter (some new sim cards come with cut-outs that acts as adapters so a cheaper option would be to go to a MTN store and get a prepaid sim for R1 or so) to get the old phone working... Backup to Google Drive and restore on the new phone. I've done it a couple of times.

Try this first: remove whatsapp from the new phone. put the sim into the new phone. Get internet access working on the old phone (via wifi hostpot on the new phone if needed). Open Whatsapp on the old phone and select the verify option. They will sent a code via sms to the new phone. Enter this code into on whatsapp on the old phone to verify it.

Backup to Drive....

Ngwe23 thought the ban hammer had got you.
Luckily not,it's good to have some alternative views on here instead of the current status quo around MYBB that was setting in like a rot.

How would one do this moving from Android to iPhone

That is a question I've been asking myself for a while now but it seems it can't be done, there are some malware programs claiming to be able to do it on the net but they don't work.

Hi. I tried and tested this when I moved from a Samsung S4 to a Huawei P8 lite, no problems... Copied the entire WhatsApp folder...

Although I had a Google Drive backup, this was obviously much faster

For posterity:

SOLUTION:
Very carefully seat the nano SIM into the micro SIM slot of your old phone. If you get the placement right your phone will connect.
Open Whatsapp and backup to cloud
Remove SIM from old phone, seat it in new phone and restore.
Success :)

Thanks to all you guys for suggestions.

NOTE:
Nano to micro SIM adapter didn't work because when the micro SIM was cut down the sizing was slightly out.
Same thing when I tried to fit it into a new SIM card - sizing was out.

For future reference just keep everything (contacts, photos, apps) backed up to the cloud. That way it is very easy when you change or lose a phone.
