So my dad bought this 5kg cylinder elsewhere and I want to get it filled en route home today. I need to stop for something else at builders, so I want to know do they fill canisters that weren't bought at builders? What price can I expect for a 5kg re-fill?

AFAIK you cannot. Refilling of gas bottles seems to be quite controlled and usually a refill is only done by the gas company to whom the bottle belongs. I don't think Builders fill any bottles - only exchange.

If you buy a bottle at Makro (say Cadac) you can have it filled there if they have a filling depot but you need to pay inside and get a slip. I'm not sure about refills after the initial fill but maybe call them? Maybe if the bottle you have is a brand they sell they can help you.

Hmmm maybe it depends on the branch then. I've tried a few around Joburg West Rand and was turned away.

Best to call ahead to the specific branch I guess.

Builders only swop 9kg and up bottles.

Brights in Montague Gardens (behind Makro) exchange and fill bottles.
I assume the other Brights branches also does refill

9kg gas is R210, so I guess R140 +\-

It would typically be the 'warehouse' branches and even then, some of those may not do it.. the warehouse closest to me fill the bottles, so I haven't bothered checking the others..

Most hardware stores will refill the gas tanks you can buy off the shelf. There are also gas shops that you can refill it at. Google...

Yes, thanks. I do actually frequent a gas shop for some 9kg bottles, but it is out of my route home. Builders is, and on the Builders website I thought the info was vague, hence asking the people.

You can fill your cylinder anywhere. The cylinder does not belong to any store and it does not belong to you either. You, and whatever shop are in effect renting it.

I fill my gas bottles at Builders, they are the only place left since the other gas place closed down. Seems like it is branch dependent though, best phone your specific branch.

Only for 9kg and up bottles. The typical 5kg bottle you buy is yours.

Have bought a 9kg at Makro and have filled at Builders no issue, 9kg was around R230 to fill, so 5kg would be around 120+-

Also shop around for gas prices as it is not regulated.
