Hmmm, well I got to wondering, as I do from time to time...And thought that perhaps as a hin-centive, if the name of a certain supplier is mentioned, in let's say less than a glowing light, in a thread, said thread, hence forth known as 'that' thread, is summarily deleted and relegated to digital heaven for a small under the counter/table palm-filler 'n all... >:)

P.S. Read quick, this reply only has moments to live!?!

Why don't you just cut-out everyone and buy directly from Gigabyte, Seagate and Kingston instead? Problem solved ;)

The thing is .. when I worked at my previous job (a reseller) the markup was just 10%.

On these prices however it ranges from 10% - 100% ...

What gives?

I would save almost R2000 if I could buy directly. And because my local reseller's prices are absurd.

That and usually nobody in the store actually knows or cares to read up on any specs like you the consumer.

They just hype **** up they have in stock and everything else is crap. I Dislike our retailers in general and would much preferred it if rectron would have allowed me to buy directly from them + 15% markup etc.

Why don't they allow guys who have A+ certification or similar to buy from them? It's only right :>

A+ just make you dangerous.

If you are not happy with the prices your local PC shop charge, buy online or at another shop.

Here you go.

Point 1. What is the ****ing point of a retailer if he doesn't carry stock. Retailers have a very simple purpose, which is summed up in four simple points:
- Break bulk, which online retailers don't do, because suppliers sell per unit, not per pallet.
- Allow us to grope the products, to see if we like them, again, a service which online retailers don't provide.
- Instant gratification, I want it NOW, I walk into a store and buy it NOW. Something that some online retailers have realised, but Graeme definitely hasn't.
- Provide service and advice which manufacturers and wholesalers are not set up to provide, and again, online retailers know less about their products than their customers, who get all their questions answered by the "manufacturer's" website anyway.

Now you may be thinking that online retailers provide other services like:
- Having an account with the suppliers and
- Allowing us to choose from different products which they've gathered from different suppliers.

Now this is true, but what is this worth to me? I can set up my own account with the suppliers with little effort, and buying from two or ten suppliers is no more difficult than buying from one retailer. As an added bonus, I cut out the, generally, full-of-bull**** online retailer. So, not more than 3%! OK, I'll be generous, if the online retailer provides great service, they can take 5%.

[deleted - irrelevant]

Edit: The new consumer protection act sums it up nicely: If you want to sell goods, you will take FULL and UNCONDITIONAL responsibility for the selling and support of those goods. If you're not willing to do this, get out of retailing.

Lets see, what service does PnP provide?

-Break bulk: Check
-Goods inspection: Sort of
-Instant gratification and convenient location: Check
-Service and advice: Check and sort of

So that's why we don't buy direct from Unilever, Tiger Brands, Pioneer Foods etc; PnP is a proper retailer that adds value for the customer.

Why don't you girls start your own retail warehouse, import the goods directly from the manufacturers and be done with? Then we'll all be happy cause one retailer in South Africa won't follow the system and do as he pleases. The rest can then simply close their doors since they don't play along nicely with the other kids.

P.S. Did you know that you can buy directly from Esquire? Sure, you get pathetic service and every 3rd product will be faulty, but that's what you're going to get if there isn't something like the supplier -> Wholesaler -> Retailer -> Reseller -> Buyer hierarchy.

Why do you HAVE to buy from Rectron? NO one here can actually force Rectron to bend over and serve you, so why not just take it up with them? OR, look for someone who's willing to sell you Rectron goods @ cost price. Oh, and you have to insist that he collects it from them, builds & tests the PC, and deliver to your doorstep withing 48hours. Or take him to small claims court and give him this "consumer protection act" BS everyone is raving about so much.

P.S.S. I'm sure if you actually asked nicely, some of us could have sold you the same goods @ 5%-10% markup, considering that we (generally) need to send a driver (costs petrol + car rent + maintenance + salary) to collect & deliver the goods.

PNP, by they way, is a supermarket and it works slightly different. They have the infrastructure, staff and setup to cater for idiots who don't even know how to use a debit card. Rectron and other retailers simply don't have it, don't want it, and don't care about it. Which is why they relay on the poor resellers to have those measures in place instead. But, at the same time, if you figure out how to buy your milk directly from the farmer (who's probably 300KM away), your oats directly from Bokomo and your Coffee directly from Nesley (they have an office in down-town Randburg, go visit them) then you don't even need a PNP either.

Computer dealers do offer extra value.
If you order a custom PC, we assemble it for you, most of us don't even charge extra for this. If a component fails, we diagnose the problem and fix it.
When granny buys a new printer, we install the drivers for her and show her how everything works.
If she still can't get it to work at home, she calls us and we help her over the phone or drive out to her place.
It's easier and cheaper driving to you local PC shop than all the way to Milnerton for a pack of DVDs.
We will often beat another shops prices for our good customers, sometimes even making a loss.

There are so many other things and when I think of them I will add them in here.

This reseller buys from many suppliers among them, Rectron, in Cape Town. I know, I used to work there.

Are these prices reasonable?
