I am trying to make sense of a tracert on my line which is with Verizon, here is a portion (all Verizon servers as far as I can tell). I have added the location as indicated by IP2location.com:

5 15 ms 19 ms 11 ms 196.31.93.49 (Cape Town)
6 74 ms 26 ms 26 ms 196.31.249.69 (Cape Town)
7 176 ms 191 ms 312 ms 196.30.229.221 (Johannesburg)
8 210 ms 180 ms 198 ms 196.30.229.134 (Johannesburg)
9 208 ms 200 ms 196 ms 146.188.2.241 (UK)

It looks to me like there is a major delay between Cape Town and JHB which even dwarfs the international link.

Firstly, why would the connection go through JHB and second, why the huge latency?

Thanks.
:confused:

Hop 7 could be the slowest hop, but that means any hop after it could have exactly the same delay. They were just sent at different times so had to contend with different conditions.

If you were to send many more packets, and take the average and deviations it would tell you more than just 3 packets.

the connection is most likely routing through Verizon's core routers in JHB before breaking out internationally. That should explain the JHB route.
As for hops 7&8 those are definitely where your issues lie (well not your issues but Verizon's)

Hope this helps

These Verizon clowns are sloppy!

Why they're routing through their extremely slow CPT->JHB link I can't understand:confused:
