take it back, they ( distributor ) should/can change the kb to a us/uk one. this kb is not a normal layout, they should be able to fix it.

What's "fixable" about it? This model has this keyboard, that's how it is, choosing the correct keyboard layout in Windows is the solution, cool?

It's an 87 key keyboard, maybe that helps?

Thanks Walty, you're my man! For some reason an option called "Ink Correction" was selected, so it didn't work as should.

Thanks to Beanie and friends for the help, if I wasn't on GPRS I would have been speedier and less frustrated, ;) :D :p

Thanks bro's!

Sorry, I'm on GPRS this weekend, so bear with me please.

It has a Pound sign on the 3 key and a dollar $ sign on the 4 key, I get this when I try to make the pound sign #
I'm quite lucky in that I have a laptop here with a full uk keyboard, pound on the 3, dollar on 4, hash and AT in the same place as your photos.
I can 100% confirm it works in windows set to UK.
I also have a full US keyboard on the other laptop, and the hash is on the 3 key.
So...I'm thinking...even though you have set it to UK, windows is blindly ignoring you and keeping it set to US (default). See if you have two languages configured, if so, remove the US (English)and leave UK,which will make it the new default, windows will say something like "US English is in use and will be removed on next restart", so do a restart.

P.S. you mentioned some dead keys in one of the posts above..normally, if you have the wrong layout, 99% of the keys will still work, you just get an incorrect character displayed. if you have a large amount of dead keys then I wouldnt bet on the layout being wrong, more than likely a bad keyboard controller/keyboard ribbon cable.

edit:
that is what i get for opening a bunch of tabs and composing a reply in peace whilst drinking a beer...an answer, 20 minutes late, and no use to man or beast

Got it fixed thanks to Walty's screenshot on the previous page Werner, I appreciate the input however, what happened was....

It was set to English South Africa, this is a Telkom Laptop which you get on ADSL contract, so whoever set it up either at telkom or Toshiba chose the wrong layout. To be quite honest, I have never had to configure a keyboard layout for the pc's I've used, so I didn't know where to start looking, but thanks to Beanie and others I managed to look at the screen on Wkipedia and see it is indeed UK.

So it was set to English South Africa, with an extra option called Ink Correction. I thought for some reason I had to choose the ink correction option as well when choosing English UK, so the keys didn't work, I then removed the ink correction option and just used UK and it's working fine.

I actually prefer this layout to the conventional ones, makes it much easier to type and faster as well.

It's something to get used to.

How do I get the "ALT + number" combination keys to work on this keyboard however, for instance saying se in Afrikaans with the correct spelling? The normal ALT + numbers don't work?

;) :D :p

alt+ keycodes only work on number pads.
so they wont work on the top row of numbers. you have to turn the numberpad ON on a laptop

if you turn on numlock (normally FN+NUMLOCK) they you will see the UIOJKL890 block of keys becomes a numberpad...they you can do your kappies etc in conjunction with alt.

yes, you will need 3 hands:) unless you keep numlock on.

so, either put numlock on, or use ALT+FN+UIOPJKL890 pressing all three at the same time, like some kind of zombie voodoo trick

weird hey, the second numlock question i have answered tonight. normally this type of topic doesnt come up ever.

You're looking at a Toshiba off a French website - what about French?

I actually see the tiny numbers printed on those keys, you have to zoom in, but it's there

Thanks for the explanation Werner, really appreciate it ;)
