If the much awaited anouncement for the 17th is the 2G for R399 and nothing more I'm not impressed. Not bad if you can use 2G a month but for a large group of people that's not helping us anything.

The other prices have also been reduced, look at the website. There's now a 500MB bundle for R250 etc. I think it was a pretty impressive announcement actually, just hope it lasts indefinitely and not for a few months.

I think this pricing now makes HSDPA a viable alternative for probably 99% of personal/residential ADSL users, there aren't many people that download more than 2GB a month, and those 2GB are now cheaper than a 384k Telkom line with ISP account etc. There's also the major advantage of mobility, not dealing with Telkom, no installation etc. I think if MTN make this a permanent offer it'll hit Telkom very hard, and who could complain about that. :D

@MtnUser Just get a few prepaid sims and rotate them with prepaid bundles. By the time you get to your last sim, your first sim will be ready for reloading. ;)

Multiple data bundles are not available as yet but it is something we are looking into

I don't think its even EDGE that's the problem, a lot of people can't get 3G coverage where they are anyway, the problem with Virgin is general network speeds and stability etc. within the limitations of GPRS/EDGE. Just depends whether the frustration's worth it to you or not I guess. :D

I have tried virgin... they are bad.

1. After a bit of browsing on my phone with virgin sim my phone restarts itself... never happened before using MTN or VC.
2. Above happens with my E620 data card too... Once again its never happened before.
3. No contact with data support on VM. You HAVE to log a queery and they will contact you. No use asking the call center staff as they "dont know about this data stuff" in their own words... MTN and VC has data support lines. And some call center staff at 808 like Charl and Kabelo who knows whats going on with data as they were in 1555 before.

I find VM service totally lacking in comparison with MTN and VC when it comes to support and reliability. Yeah these are 2 big networks but they are big for a reason. Some of their staff work hard at it to try and give good service. The VM consultants Ive spoken too sounded too bored to care.

****End of my rant and rave, make your choice an informed one****

I have no objection with that, and i agree with all you guys are saying, all i am saying is that for low usage users, virgin still beats all, as most low end users dont mind trying again and again and putting up with the bad service... remember, this country is in many ways more cost driven than service since we are used to bad service.

Still really peeved at the ludicrous R2/Mb non-bundle "rape and pillage" rate for casual users of MTN data services.

I just want to use the service when I want to use it, pay a fair price, and not get poked in the posterior for giving them my custom.

Yeah, this is an opportunity lost. Even dropping the non-bundle price to R1.50 per MB would have enticed the casual high speed user to use MTN - e.g. those with datacards on the move who need to do email and some occasional browsing.

Virgin is just not reliable enough for important work stuff.

The R2/MB is a bit of a bollocks. And then if you want a bundle its either 10MB or 100MB? Nothing in between?

Jongi I hear u man.

The fact is MTN is a company.

Now any company or corporation try to entise usage of their product correct ? Now if you don't use 50MB @ R 2.00 worth of data a month then there is no use subscribing to the 100MB bundle.

Now MTN needs clients to use their network that makes it worth while to maintain. Now if you only use 20MB a month in your area and another 20 people in that area that is 400MB. Now does MTN really need to maintain a tower @ very high prices just because of low usage. Think in the Bigger picture. Yes low end users pay more because it's a minimum usage on an exspensive exchange.

Hope this makes it's slightly clearer.

Another thing. VM can charge R 0.50 because they don't maintain the towers but Cell C does.

Just my 2c

Pitbull/MTNDD - it is a consequence of lack of meaningful competition. A market can best be determined by whether products are driven by the company's wish to make profit, or by a company's need to produce a product consumers want.
