to make a long story short, i moved from nedbank to fnb in november 2012. there was not sufficient time to switch all my debitorders, and some tried to debit on the nedbank account.

seeing that there was no funds, penalty fees was charged.

also nedbank refuses to close the account unless i pay the outstanding penalty fees. they also load bank charges every month, while the account is not being used.

so my question is: can you get blacklisted for outstanding bank charges?

yes, they can.

Why cant you just pay-off the account and close it.

they probably will add interest to the bank charges and refuse to close it until the interest, and interest on the interest is paid off...

Its your debt and not anyone else's fault.

Pay it off and move on, there is absolutely no reason why Nedbank should close the account while it is in arrears.

The problem was not caused by them, it was either by your ineffeciency or the places that run the debit orders that didn't update in time. The sooner you had paid it the better, because as you say they now add more fees every month.

If you don't have time to switch your debit orders then you don't have time to switch banks. Your argument is ridiculous. Pay up, apologise to everyone you've inconvenienced and don't do it again.

As others have said. You should have kept enough cash in both accounts to maintain your responsibilities.

I recently did the same switch, and I made sure there was always money in my Nedbank account to cover any debit orders that hadn't switched yet.. kept it that way for at least 5 months until I saw that no debit orders came off. I then went to Nedbank and closed the account.

You were lazy, you must pay the debt.

While I agree that it's your fault they also don't need to keep your account open to keep track of the charges so that is just another scam. I also understand that unlike most posters in this thread not everyone has double their salary to keep in both accounts and what they ask for unpaid debit orders is just ridiculous.

I wonder how this thread would have gone if he hadn't used full caps in the title.

Pretty much the same? You can't screw up a bunch of debit orders and then blame anyone other than yourself.

Wow, harsh thread. Would have made sense to make sure money was in the previous account for potential debit orders. Having said that, your financial status may not allow for that.

How much is the charges anyway? Can't be more than a R100? Chances are the charges will keep on increasing till you pay it.

There was no need to have anything to do with the previous account. I would hope that everyone knows what debit orders are authorised - it's your responsibility to ensure they're taken care of if you change banks. People change banks every day in this country and it's generally not an issue.

Did the same, made sure all debit order companies were aware manually(fnb can do it for you) and then after the 2nd week ensuring nothing went off(1 did.. error on their side which i made them correct) i closed the account.

Thanks for responses, and yes I will just have to pay it.

Fees currently at - R1373. Mainly due to autopage continually trying to debit a R8.99!!! The autopage contract finished 12months ago but they continued to debit the R8.99 every month.

They agreed to refund me and to also pay the debit order penalties charged as a result of the R8.99 they've been trying to debit.

The balance I will pay at the end of march.
