Saw a sign at the sunninghill Spar that you can renew your license disc, but I have heard contradicting versions of what is required in order to do so.

In some cases it’s your renewal form, ID Book/Card and others just the previous years License Form & Drivers license.

Had some time to put in more research. This is for anyone who might have the same question.

With your old License disk and Drivers License/ID (Always have both just in case) you can submit and pay at Spar. It takes two days to be processed and the new disc can be collected at the Spar (R120 Handling Fee).

They recommend that for drivers who own more than one vehicle, submit at a post office instead (As submitting may cause admin issues at the licensing department that may result in your drivers being blocked).

Why not do it at the post office?

I think the Post Office option is a Gauteng thing. You can't do so in the Western Cape. In Cape Town you have the option to do it online, by getting a reference from the CoTC. You then do an EFT and the licence comes by post. We've done that for several years without problems. Or else you go to traffic dept offices. I don't know about other provinces.

I'd prefer that option to be honest, I forget until almost the 21 day grace period.

I always go to my local municipality 07h50 and wait in line for them to open, in and out in under 20 minutes every year.
But only if you do it Tuesday to Thursday and never just after pay day, rather go mid month around the 15th.
All mondays are very busy as people are queueing who just bought their new vehicles over the weekend.
All fridays are busy and I have yet to figure this one out.
But my method has worked well every single year.

.

The waiting rooms at the local doctors are always packed on a Monday and Friday!
Monday, because a ton of folk have hangovers and cannot enter the mine and need to be booked off...
Friday, Long weekend, a ton of schedule there appointments, then do not go back to work, citing delays at the doctors......

I would think this might be a similar reason for Friday being a "busy" day!

I have renewed all my vehicle's licenses the past two years via the service offered by Spar. They need a copy of either the license disc or the license papers, your ID Document and drivers' license. They make copies of it, log into some system and load the request.

You leave and within a day or two Spar will contact you to come and collect the new license. If you have any fines outstanding and the authorities refuses to renew the license, you first need to go to Spar where you can even pay this. Then in about another 1-2 days you can collect your new license.

I once had an outstanding fine, which I then paid at Spar. They definitely paid the fine via their services provider and I checked online and found it has indeed been paid.

By the way, has anyone been making use of the service by FNB? I saw on their App that you can now pay fines and have them renew your license every year.

ah yes clever thinking, take a Friday off to do your morning chores around town and then take a long weekend. Nice, might just give this a try in future

I saw it sometime ago but it also carries a big admin fee, so no i haven't, i will queue for 20 minutes rather

It's a queue for you service. Same at the Spar and Tops in Midstream

Yeah, not willing to queue 20 minutes to 2 hours or even longer at various places, unfortunately carries a hefty fee - one I am willing to pay.

Yup, a queue for longer than 20 minutes = me whip out cash and pay for the service rather.
But give my method a try and see, go mid month between Tue - Thu and see if it works in your area

Does spar charge an admin fee to renew disk.. Post office charges R72 and u get it immediately..

Think Spar charges R120 rand and you have to wait a few days. I went to the post office twice 1st time system was offline and the next time there was a massive que for grants so I just went to Spar as it was convenient but not faster or cheaper.

Went to the local Post office last Wednesday got there just after 8, 1 person in front of me who was busy paying then out a few minutes after that. Plus could pay by credit card
