Can you save money by only half-filling your petrol tank?

My time is more valuable than whatever possible cost saving there is for my car.

I fill up when the car gets to 100km range regardless of how close it is to a petrol decrease. Actually I often fill up the day before to avoid long queues at the petrol station the next day. Or if it's an increase, I go the day of the increase.

Last few increases/decreases would have saved me no more than R20.

You do save. You are lugging along less weight. Less wear and tear on tyres and shocks etc etc bla bla

But its such a small saving that its irrelevant

You must have a small tank. Waiting until after the last decrease saved me R70+.

It's always nicer to have R70 than not to have it.

35L tank.

We factor in the petrol to go to the petrol station as well.

Same size as my wife's car, saving is negligible on a tank that small. Mine is 75 litres though, and saving is saving. Plus I drive pass many petrol stations daily.

Basically this really.. Granted the last few decreases have been significant enough for me to pay attention... Plus the truck stop is close enough that I don't really have to worry about queues... They have a dedicated car pump that the trucks can't get to.

Does a thin person save more compared to a obese giant?

So, its cheaper for a petite slim 40 kg girl to drive my car to Durban, compare to a huge 150 kg sumo wrestler?

Next time I bire a driver, he will have to first go on a strict diet...

Negligable savings.

Why not a 3rd of a tank...or a quarter...8th....16th...where does it end?

It's a theoretical saving of a few cents that can be negated by countless factors when refilling more often.

It's a BS, pointless concept.
Yup
Thats like saying don't drive on a full stomach (extra weight), rather wait until you get to work and then fire up the bacon & eggs

How about this. If you keep your car in the sun, fuel expands. So you're getting more fuel for free!!!

Don't park undercover, park in the sun!!!
And fill up your tyres with Nitrogen, it is lighter than air.
In winter uninstall your air con as you dont need it for 6 months

The weight of the fuel in your car would not have much of an impact, compared to the total weight of the vehicle - including passengers and and any cargo.
You'd get a better improvement in fuel efficiency by making sure your tires are at the right pressure and not under-inflated.

And if you have to transport passengers, feed them some baked beans first. That way they will be full of gas whilst your tank is half.
