[Canada]She's been growing a garden for monarch butterflies for 2 decades. So why did the city mow it down?

Susan McKee returned from her summer vacation earlier this month only to discover that her naturalized pollinator garden — once filled with endangered monarch butterflies and bees — was gone.

"It's all chopped down. Everything's just chopped to the ground," said McKee, who has lived in her Briscoe Street West home in London, Ont., for nearly 20 years.

McKee said neighbours told her they saw city staff cut down the plants with weed wackers after someone had filed a complaint.

But without the government, who would mow down gardens for endangered species?

If it was off her property, surely it's the councils, I mean not in South Africa where they don't seem to care.

Her garden, once filled with more than 20 varieties of plants — including milkweed, periwinkle, chicory and wild rose — was "quite high," she said. It covered her front yard and the boulevard.

Why would she be issued with a bylaw ticket if it was her property? And why would the neighbors complain?

It could be an example of Grafton, where people were trying to get rid of bears but one woman kept feeding them(on her own property), encouraging them to come back.

Apparently there are bylaws about letting weeds grow unrestricted on your property...

Surely only if it begins impacting your neighbors tho?
I think the idea is that overgrown gardens make a place look run down, could affect local property prices etc.. Seems very busy body-ish but have heard that some places in the states regulate if you can have old cars in your back yard for much the same reason.
