Cancellation of ADSL and Telkom line with Cybersmart

I have a Cybersmart "one-price" account and I am emigrating at the end of February. Until then, I still need to work (which involves using my ADSL at home as well).

I was aware of Cybersmart's one calendar months notice which I tried sending them a fax to their 087 number (notice for the end of Feb only), but it failed. I contacted them and got some alternate contact details which I'll use. I have until the end of January to send it, so not in any hurry with that.

I phoned Telkom today on 10219 to put in notice for the telephone line as well and was informed that I needed to speak to someone at 0800 6111 16 as my ADSL portion was not with Telkom. Phoned that number and was informed that I need to arrange with my ISP to ask for the cancellation of the line at the same time on their cancellation order.

Asked Cybersmart to do this and I was informed that it's not possible and the ADSL has to be cancelled first and then I need to request for the cancellation of my line myself. I phoned Telkom again and again they confirmed that ISP can send in cancellation of the line at the same time, they just need to clearly indicate this on the cancellation order. I decided to phone them again and check with someone else as well, got the exact same story.

Went back to Cybersmart told them this and got told the same thing (at one point they were going to make an exception for me and cancel at the end of January!!! I never wanted it cancelled at the end of January!!!). I also started involving Laurie Fialkov and he is also telling me the same thing - that I need to cancel with Telkom after I have cancelled that ADSL bit.

Am I the only person in South Africa who want to cancel my ADSL and telephone line together? I do not want to have a telephone line for the month of March when I'm in the UK and I don't want to be without internet in February. But this doesn't seem possible at all.

When I spoke to Telkom, a few of the people I spoke to informed me other ISPs do it all the time. Has anyone experienced this with other ISPs?

If this is the case, which I'm not sure it is, as I spoke to several different people at Telkom who cannot understand why Cybersmart don't just want to write a simple instruction on the cancellation order, people need to be warned against going with these "one-price" options. Despite saving a couple of rands each month, you will end up having to pay for an extra month's line rental, because you cannot cancel your ADSL and line simultaneously.

Anyone care to give some input - I am absolutely furious about this, because it's not like I'm trying to cancel at the last minute, and even with time at hand, it seems impossible to do...

Just an update on this - to make sure that I do give Cybersmart the benefit of the doubt. Laurie came back to me to say the process is automated with no way to "indicate" a cancellation of the line on there. Of course now I will have to contact Telkom again, but will keep this up to date to ensure that I don't just give a one-sided view.

I am so glad I never signed my line over to an ISP.

Good luck, mulderpf :)

Check out this: http://hellopeter.com/telkom-sa-complaint-[372595]

It seems that Telkom are the ones with the problem. They seem hesitant to cancel the telephone line until ADSL is disabled on your line.

If you want to get to the bottom of the problem, ask Laurie how the cancellation process works, and when and how Cybersmart informs Telkom of the ADSL line cancellation, since Cybersmart's ADSL lines all come from Telkom. If Cybersmart emails Telkom telling them that your line must be cancelled on a particular day, then Telkom can also schedule the cancellation of your landline on that same day.

I firmly believe the problem lies with Telkom.

I got my line moved back from Cybersmart to Telkom, but for the last 3 months I'm not paying any ADSL rental. Telkom says my line was cancelled, Cybersmart doesn't have me as a client anymore, but my line is working 100%. Have spoken to a couple of different guys at Telkom and all of them just say the system shows that my line was cancelled on blab la and that I don’t have a ADSL line assigned to me. Every time I try to explain that I do have an active line and am using it atm just gets me silence on the line. You just got to love the African way of doing business.

For my own peace of mind I’m also paying the ADSL rental every month, so I’m currently in credit with Telkom, for the day when they wake up and want to charge me for the months the line was active.

i would have placed the cash in an interest bearing account personally instead of paying Telkom

Then I might just be tempted to spend it :D This way I know it's there and can't be used for anything else.
