Cancellation of current Vodacom contract and moving to either Afrihost or Telkom

Hello everyone

So I currently have a contract with Vodacom. I was due for an upgrade in Dec 2015 (which I didn't take up) and my contract ended in Mar 2016 (which I didn't renew). I've been contemplating moving to either Afrihost (AH) or Telkom (TK). And I would like to keep my Voda number as I've had it for over a decade.

I have several issues:
1. If I move to AH, my number will be ported to MTN & I'm not sure I want to deal with their customer service as yet. Has anyone experienced any problems with using AH's mobile data package but with their number being with MTN and how has that customer interaction been?

2. I don't think cancelling my contract with Voda should be an issue as I have not taken any of their upgrades. They might possibly nail me on the cellphone insurance side, but if that becomes an issue I can still port to AH and use Voda as my insurance provider. Has anyone else been in a similar predicament and how did you deal with the issue.

And lastly 3. AH or TK? Data is my biggest issue, but of course I would still need to retain my Voice and SMS functionality. Any thoughts on those, pros and cons?

Regards,
MaKinte

First get yourself on pre-paid at Vodacom. Cancel contract and tell them you want to go pre-paid, ignore any attempts to lure you back in.

I hope Vodacon has sorted out their system. Did mine in January and it took 4 months for Vodacon to release my number.

BTW you can port from a contract. You don't have to move to prepaid.
4. The donor side shall not refuse a port because a post paid subscriber still owes money, nor may they delay the porting until such debt is collected, unless the subscriber is already subject to suspension of outgoing or incoming calls because of failure to pay a bill.

The networks want you to move to prepaid so that they can ensure they get their money. Within the network you can't move to prepaid until you settle your account.

@OP: Will you be using existing phone or do you need to buy a new phone?

How much data do you need on your cell per month?

I've been trying to the same since Friday 30 September. Issues to date:

1. Could not buy and RICA MTN sim card on Friday as "the system was down."

2. Forgot ID at home on Monday, so could only buy sim card on Tuesday.

3. Can't sms port request to 083 767 8287 without airtime. Hence loaded R5 airtime on Vodacom prepaid number.

4. SMS Portme#new sim number to 083 767 8287 at 10:07 with no response, do this again at 14:10 with no response

5. Go to MTN shop, get told porting takes 48 hours and I should wait.

MODS why won't the forum allow me to post the full response, get redirected to a link that says I'm being blocked...

Eventually got feedback that my port request is being processed.

Only thing I did different was to make sms all caps - so PORTME#new-sim-number.
