Cancelling your TV license through SABC's official channels is almost impossible

After following the correct procedure and supplying the required documentation, my TV License has been successfully canceled.

For now. Just wait 5 years until you get a nasty SMS from some random lawyer saying you owe the SABC backdated license fees for the last 5 years.

Even if you think you succeeded wait 4 years for some random debt collector to phone you. Where SABC verified they never removed you from some excel spreadsheet and you have to pay. XD

The best way to cancel a TV license is to just ignore it.

The fun started when I took over my son's TV when he moved overseas. I did all the paperwork ext, but just did not hear from the SABC again.
I send the emails 5 times. No answer. I tried calling but the transfer went into the dark outer space.
They can now go and F themself.

I tried to cancel the licence in the name of my late parent and was told that the parent personally had to apply and provide the death certificate. Guess I had to call up the spirits. But, pay yours...it's the right thing to do.

That place is riddled with the damage of affirmative action and BEE. Those are not culturally part of 'getting things done'.

I have all my paperwork in order with an official cancellation on a SABC letterhead.
I am clean
Going to heaven

I haven't owned a tv since 2005. I gave up trying to cancel my licence in 2007.

Basically my experience 5 years ago - now I just give the lawyers the same treatment.

Cancelling your TV licence is like cancelling a Telkom contract.

To give you a comparison, I lived in the UK for 8 years, had a UK TV license that I paid for annually. When I left the UK to come back to South Africa, I phoned the UK TV License people to cancel my TV license. Not only did they simply accept my cancellation verbally over the phone, without having to provide any documentation or proof of anything, but they actually refunded me pro-rata for the unused portion of my license that I had paid in advance for the year.

So the situation has improved then?
Haven't had an appetite for their contracts since the whole blacklist debacle.

No, not easier, but in comparison, cancelling Telkom is easy. A TV lisence is almost impossible to cancel. Tried cancelling an old lady, who died TV lisence , sent in depth certificate, and all the toots ...

Six months later I gave up.

The South African government states that if you have sold, disposed of, or lost your television set, you are no longer required to have a TV licence.
Does one need a TV licence:
if your TV was stolen?
if you stole a TV?

What are the criteria attached to "lost your television set"?

Dear SABC, I was moving stuff around in the TV room and somehow my TV got lost and I have not found it after that, it is now just a room (without a TV).

You need a TV licence if you buy a TV, if you steal your TV, a TV licence is not required. Nor are you expected to pay for the electricity to power your stolen TV, it is okay to steal that as well, as per your local ANC counciler.

The domestic servant cleaned the TV, and it stopped functioning, so it is mo longer a TV, but useless junk.

I do have a TV and a license from way way back when but don't have any receiver any more, it's purely for IP stuff/console.

I decided not to pay mine which was due last month ... but it feels like it is almost worth doing to stop getting the (almost) daily begging spam and SMS's that I'm now flooded with saying I must pay or else etc.

What can happen if I don't? They say interest etc. but ... how many people must not be paying, loads !!!
I got gatvol of all the SMS's , so I just paid it.

One person's junk is another person's gold, you could give the (broken) TV to your domestic worker as an xmas bonus, it will probably be sold on to some "poor looter" anyway.
