Cannot access MTN voice messages while roaming

I am on MTN prepaid and have my phone with me in the UK. I diverted calls to voicemail and intended to pick up messages and return calls using my local (UK) sim.

The MTN sim picks up signal on either the Orange or EE network and I've checked that I can make outgoing local and SA calls.
But, I can't get my voicemail messages.

I dial 002783100 and get asked for my voice mailbox number. I enter my phone number 073 xxx xxxx and get told "The mailbox number is invalid" and then get disconnected.
I've tried a number of variations of my phone number, dropping the zero and entering the last 9 digits only, entering in international format 0027 73.... etc but get the same response.

I've contacted the roaming help desk but am not having much luck with a solution.

Can one simply not get your voicemail messages when on pre-paid???

Dial *111*11# from your cellphone and MTN will call you back, allowing you to listen to your voice messages. The cost of this call will be charged at the receiving call rate that applies in the country that you are in..
Or dial +27 83 100 0000 to access your voicemail box directly. The call will be charged as a roaming call from your international destination to South Africa. Remember to set up a VoiceMail password before you leave. Dial 120 for this service.

Thanks I have tried both those options.

*111*11# is only for contract customers. Callback doesn't work for pre-paid.

I have also dialled +27 83 100 0000 and get prompted for my voice mailbox number. I end up with same error message about invalid mailbox number and get disconnected again.
