Canon EF-S 18-200mm / Sigma 18-200mm DC, any one used either?

Haha, I was looking for reviews of the new 18-270mm with the PZD motor in it and stumbled on this review. Not a great review but funny none the less (the video)

Possibly slightly NSFW.

That guy makes very funny reviews. Have you seen it when he tests the weather proofing on the Canon L lenses?

Nope, but was that the clip in video where he throws coffee on the lens?

I saw one where he has a Canon Lens coffee cup and then by mistake washes the real lens under the tap, or so we are led to believe.

I bought the Tamron 18-270mm (non PZD version) and the guy at the store took me on the streets and took about 10 photos of all different things and printed them on 10x8 for free so I could see the results before making a decision. Was really awesome and then this weekend I have been having a good play with it. I am really impressed, it is not that much of a fan of low light and when the light is low the AF can be a bit slow but really happy with the choice I must say. Think my starters kit is complete now... for a few months anyway!

Strangely enough from the Jessops next door to my work (High Holborn). I went to have a look only and ended up buying the lens. Shows what good customer service can do I guess. I had read reviews about the lenses having calibration issues so he went through how to look for problems and ended up giving me tips and then of course the actual prints so I could see the results. All in all I had to just buy it :D

The camera shop here in PE is happy to let me try out the lens, they don't go quite so far as to print out copies (TBH I've never asked them to) but I do take out the CF card and view the images on the screen which is going to be harder to fool than printed copies.

They also let you keep any second hand lens purchased through them for a week before they give the money the seller in case you're not satisfied.

I wasn't suggesting anything to that effect. I was just saying the Sigma has HSM as an option, the Canon does not. I like the HSM/USM motors, and I missed it on the 18-200mm.

I wasn't even thinking about this, but looking at the photozone.de reviews (Canon, Sigma), the Sigma does appear to be a better lens all round, except in the bokeh department.

I have a Canon 60D and have also started looking at the Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM. Has anyone used this lens and what has your experience been with it? The HSM motor is of no use on the Canon, only on the Nikon. Canon 18-200 IS non-USM is a little more. Thoughts?

Why won't your D60 work with the HSM lens? I know it's very old but still.

Also I didn't think you can even buy a non-HSM 18-200 Canon lens. I may be wrong of course.

Sure it is. Faster, quieter AF is never a bad thing.

In canon'ese it's USM, and the Canon EF-S 18-200mm doesn't have it.

Do you mean Canon 60D or Nikon D60?

What do you mean? Of course it's of use on the Canon - it's needed. No canon body has a built in focus motor - it's all in the lens.

I think you're mixing up Canon and Nikon

koffiejunkie, the Canon D60 was the second DSLR that Canon launched back in 2002. 6mp, ISO to 1000 and shutter max of 4000 et al.

Aah right. I didn't consider that anyone would still be using one of those. Still, my comment about the motor stands. All EOS bodies (film ones too) rely on the lens having its own focus motor. So HSM *is* very useful.

But, if I remember the older DSLR bodies were not EF-S mount, so you might want to double check that.

Sorry, it is a Canon 60D, EF-S mount and the Canon 18-200 is non-USM. I think I am leaning toward getting the Canon and not the Sigma.

Well the 18-135 is a better lens though. Why not think about the 15-85? Way better than any of those previously mentioned.

I wanted a single carry around lens. Went for the Canon 18-200 - very happy with it. AF is fast, great photos. Was the correct one for me.

Also using a Canon 18-200mm on my 450D, quite happy with it!
