Can't port a number from Red Bull Mobile to Cell C?

My mom's RBM contract came to an end and she decided to move over to a Cell C contract. She was on Cell C prepaid for a few days once her old contract had ended and before taking up her new contract. The Cell C store she visited in Centurion to apply for her new Cell C contract told her, her old number could not be ported to Cell C because it was on a RBM Contract before and Red Bull Mobile apparently no longer exists. In the end she was forced to take a new Cell C number.

Is there any truth to this or have the store staff once again displayed their spectacular ignorance? Surely any number can be ported, especially if you technically no longer on a RBM contract but on Cell C prepaid?

It's not really something to be fixed as the new contract has already been acquired and family and friends have already been notified of the change of number. It's really more of an enquiry about whether the info supplied by the store is accurate and for that reason I wanted to ask it in a public thread as it may be of use to others too. It seems as though at least one part of the staff's explanation is incorrect though. Red Bull Mobile is still alive and kicking according to this article which has just appeared on the front page: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broad...obile-heavy-data-prepaid-product-planned.html

Go to the store and speak to the manager,if the old number and prepaid is still on her name cell c can still port if over to her contract!

I took out my contract with cell c with some random number and after a month they(cell c store riversquare mall vereeniging) ported my old number onto my contract.

I did this because when the iphone 5 came out I wanted it the day it launched but had to wait a month for my other cell c contract to expire so they simply gave me the contract with a new number and ported my old number to it after a month. The other way they could have done it also was to take out a dual sim solution with the old number on the second sim,its a once of cost of R35 for the sim card.

Unfortunately not all consultants know these things so you have to speak to the right store.I've always been happy with cell c riversquare they know how to get things done instead of giving you excuses.

I seem to have miscommunicated what I'm trying to achieve by starting this thread. I apologise for that. I'll try to clear it up below.

The Cell C staff at the store (along with their manager) all convinced my mom that her RBM number could not be ported. The reason they supplied was they couldn't port it because the number 'belonged' to the RBM network (even though it was on Cell C prepaid at that point) and Red Bull Mobile was in the process of being shut down by Cell C. My mom eventually accepted this, took the new number and has already informed family and friends the change of number. This matter is no longer a concern to her. She's content with her new contract and number.

It is however a concern to me. My wife and my own RBM contracts are ending soon as we would both like to keep our numbers. For that reason I'm trying to find out the following:
1. Is is true that Red Bull Mobile are in the process of shutting down? An article posted on MyBB this morning certainly seems suggest that they're still around as they're planning a new offering. So I think that question is now answered.
2. Would there be a scenario in which a number could not be ported from RBM to Cell C? Still slightly concerned about this but I'm now pretty sure that the Cell C staff in question had been given incorrect information.

Yes it is possible
you must request to move your existing rbm number to a prepaid cellc number once your contracts ends
(or opt for an early termination and pay an additional fee)
once this is done you can take out a new cell c contract on your 'old' existing prepaid number

Hi martin

The info you received at the store is not correct. The only difference with Red Bull mobile contract is that you cant do an early upgrade. You have to wait for your contract to end first.
After your contract is ended, you can then migrate/ upgrade to a Straight-up package with no problems.

RBM offers are available. And not "shutting down" any time soon.

Thanks, that's everything I wanted to know.

Cell C needs to attend to the staff education at the Cell C stores in Centurion Mall (the upstairs one is the worse of the two). This is not the first time they've supplied myself or someone I know with incorrect information. I'd probably be more understanding if this was small shop in some town I've never heard of but these two stores service a huge area.

No stress dude, luckily we have a rep here that could sort you out.I agree though the staff in some stores are a bit behind the times, although to be fair thats in most companies even out of the telecommunications industry.Best practice when something doesn't sound right is to ask for a manager they normally know better.

Hi Cell C,

Theo Pieterse, manager of the Cell C centurion store says you're wrong and that it can't be done. I'm in store right now and showed him your post.

Your company's customer service leaves a LOT to be desired!

That's the one. I spent nearly two hours in there. The ONLY person who was willing to believe that this could be done only started last Friday. She was determined to get it done and after probably spending close to an hour on the phone she eventually did! Cell C, you better hang onto this girl!

Not a single other person in that store (including the manager) were even interested in helping. They rejected the idea of changing numbers from RBM to Cell C out of hand!? The Cell C store upstairs (which was the first I visited) was just as clueless, insisting that it would require multiple visits to their store before they might be able to get it sorted out (they insisted that I start out by writing a letter and even brought me a piece of paper. They would then phone me back apparently*. I left the store at that point).

*This is not my first interaction with the upstairs store. They have never once phoned back regarding anything.

I actually asked her permission to share her first name on the forums as I assumed some other may find her helpful too and she agreed. Unfortunately the paper on which she wrote her name is in my wife's handbag but if memory serves it was Sunita. I'll confirm this evening.

Ja the same centurion shop tells me I need an affidavit to a sim swop because I only have a temporary ID.

They seem to thrive on the fact that their store is filled with frustrated customers :D

Affidavit for SIM swap? You understood it wrong. Affidavit is requested in support of your claim that your SIM have been stolen. It is legal requirement. You wrote about stolen SIM in another thread.

My wife just phoned to let me know that the number was successfully ported so I can now confirm that it can definitely be done and that the Cell C store staff in Centurion Mall (bar one really special individual) are indeed clueless.
