Cantenna - possible solution wind issues

Hi guys,

After months of having a connection that drops when the wind blows, I took the step of having some pringles. I put the modem + pringles can on the antenna into the roof, stuck it in a packet to keep the dust off, directed it nicely then ran the network cable down to my router, and I've had no disconnects today. None - and it's REALLY windy.

It feels wierd, I still find myself looking out the window at the trees, hoping that I don't get dropped :)

My signal has improved from 3% with one light to around 12% with 2/3 lights. Ping time has dropped quite a bit - from 450+ms to 250ms average. Packet loss dropped from 12% to around 4%.

Jhbgirl and others, it may be an idea to try doing this - stick it in the roof. Oh, and I re-installed the new firmware and it works well now.

Think I need to invest in some pringles... Why isn't some enterprising person importing the cantenna so that we can but it locally???

Please mommy make the bad man stop. (Bad Man = Sentech)

Oh no wait... um, it did disconnect now now. So it's not a solution to everything, BUT, the wind is blowing all the time and surprisingly it's lasting more than an hour at a time. Usually it wouldn't even connect.

MrJones, I bought a cantenna when I was in the USA earlier this year, and it was an improvement on the ricoffy, pringles etc. and even tried a few other designer cans, but after still sitting with disconnects just when I needed a signal, I decided to spend the bucks and install a good dish antenna.

Sure I had fun experimenting, but adding it all up, It would have been better to spend that little bit extra and do it properly.

I am still hanging onto my cantenna in case of what, I don't know, but just in case.

My signal jumped from 12 odd % to 30 + % and no disconnects.

hmm i read somewhere that if u can get the signal above 50 or so, the pings will improve. Right now i have no antenna and im at 33% or so, so will getting a satellite dish in place improve my signal thus getting better pings?

I found the only real solution to the latency issue.

Robone,

Since my cancellation has not been finalized, I'm still taunting the orcs! I can download more than the 3G, it just costs a fscking fortune!

and yes, this forum is MUCH more interesting than the ADSL one....there's too much bleating about caps over there. They have no perspective [;)]
