Hi everyone hope you are doing well,

Now obviously you can get stuff like this Digitizing Drawing Board, 10x6 Inch Graphic Drawing Tablet with 8 Pen Nib

But this is not what I am looking to do, I want to paint a canvas and photograph it so I can then digitize it. But I am not into photography. I own a Nikon compact and it works I like it, photos are always crisp and detailed.

But my guess is for this to work I will need a bit better? Maybe? If you are doing this what do you use? I don't want expensive just something that can do what this person is doing in the video.

This guys job is to perfectly reproduce a digital copy of a painting. Surely if it's just you painting something and you want to digitise it - you don't need that extreme level of accuracy and colour reproduction? You get software that can get rid of lens distortion - afaik photoshop and affinity photo both have the ability to reduce / remove lens distortion based on lens & setting...

Then the colour correcting you can do post in software as well.

It feels like you're overthinking it unless there is some reason you really do need this extreme level of digital copying. What do you want the digitised copy for?

Phone and tripod ? I mean it should work?

When you ask a question & ignore the replies it's a bit difficult to know what you want.
I want cheap and I don't want to pay for services so I grabbed a phone tripod will be trying it out this weekend.

How well do you want it to work?
My kids are back to school tomorrow I don't have the money to spend on expensive stuff. I gave away the pieces people wanted and got rid of the rest. We need the space more then me having pipe dreams.

That doesn't answer my question. I mean you started this thread asking if you needed better than your cellphone so how good do you want it? Your nikon could well be the better solution depending on the focal lengths available.

I just figured 16MegaPixel is worse then phone's 50MegaPixel so I went with the phone.

Easy mistake to make. Photography is not just a case of 16MP < 50MP. The Nikon’s sensor is WAY bigger than the phone’s, which already makes it better.

Good to know but I took to long to try and do this. I had to clear everything out so nothing left to photograph.

Phone 50MP is usually also AI 50MP and the actual sensor MP is way less.

If you look at the properties of the files that cellphone produces they are likely 12 MP images. The high MP counts on phones are good for marketing and are technically justifiable, but you don't tend to see them in the images. Your Nikon may also have an advantage if it has a zoom lens. Zoomed in it is less likely to introduce distortions to the image.

The question is what are you trying to achieve? Art is not about accuracy and technique but about whether you like the result. Producing a painting you already don't have an accurate representation of what you're painting adding your own artist's 'touch'. What matters is whether you like the result or not. The same for taking a photograph of a painting. It's not about whether it's accurate or the best reproduction but about whether you like what you get or not.

Also on the subject of megapixels
