Cap to block shutoff valve outlet on outside tap?

I have a tap outside with an outlet to front irrigation where the shutoff valve has developed a leak. The irrigation is not needed for watering as the plants are eco and indigenous (it was merely a BC requirement).

Can I get a cap to close the outlet pipe off? What size I would need? The pipe and fittings all look to be of standard size.

Mine, but BC requirement to have it. Will keep it there and reconnect if ever needed. The leak caused a R1,600 water bill last month.

If you don't have a pipe cutter (won't get one in that space to work it anyway), make sure your cut end of copper pipe is perfectly round and all the rough bits are removed with emery paper or similar. You don't want to force the little olive (the ring inside) over the pipe or it won't seal.

Would it not just screw in here or here? I have 22 and 24mm spanners, and plumbing tape.

Will the olive self-position or do I need to position it?

I would cut the copper pipe and fit it there. You can't fit it on the plastic bit. If you cock it up, you'll have to leave your water off till you can get a plumber. There's a bit of skill needed here, so if you're not confident I'd leave it if I were you.

Look like a gavanize pipe to me, you do get a galvanize prop as well. remember the white tape. Time to get a swifting spanner.

It looks like the 15mm compression stop end I have isn’t going to work like I thought.

I think I need a male equivalent to fit into the female pipe, basically to replace the black plastic fitting/joiner/converter, if such a stop end exists?

Is this just not going to be as easy as I thought?

You will need 2 tools for this.

what you really need is either of these:

PRODUCT-6009665524719-P-01.jpg GCAP025-800x800.jpg

either take the nipple out and use the first one, or leave the nipple in and use the second. dont mix metals also, copper and galv not good, you need a di-electric fitting to join the two.

Sorted, thank you!

But there’s still a leak at this tap. I can hear the slow trickle of water in the pipe. And the section below the tap has a puddle forming when the stopcock is left open. There are no drips, so the leak must be coming from below... Time to start digging to check the pipe below for a leak. The meter ticked over by 1,000L overnight whilst stopcock was left open.

did you put thread tape on the cap?

i really hope you dont have a split at the elbow below ground and its just something else.

are you sure it isnt just the water that was left in the irrigation pipe draining out? is it drying up now?

Yes I did. At first not enough as the cap had a drip. Used more tape and sorted.

I hope not! But fear the worst. Hopefully it’s not too deep. Have my maintenance guy from Zim (does everything except electrical) coming on Wednesday to dig and investigate.

Yes I’m sure, there is nothing from above causing the puddle so it’s definitely coming from below. Think I saw bubbles from below as well.

All sorted. The leak was indeed underground at the 90’ elbow leading up to the tap and irrigation outlet. We replaced it as well as the plastic pipe inside (which we got for free as a ‘sample’ opposed to having to buy a metre of it). All in all, R450 in tools and only R350 in labour. So lucky to have my amazing Zimbabwean guy and I shudder to think what a plumber would have charged. Probably R2,500 or so! He also assembled my Weber gas braai and deep cleaned my gas hob.
