As part of more than academic research...

1) Would you prefer higher speed if it meant that your traffic would have to go through a caching proxy?
2) Would you be willing to use a caching proxy if it meant a reduced cap usage, even though this would decrease privacy?
3) Would you be OK with p2p traffic caching, even though all of your content may not be unrestricted if it resulted in either of the above?

I was wondering how effective a decent caching solution would be once we all have decent last mile speeds...

To be more specific, since you asked...
Suppose most of our caps are used by:
a) (newly cacheable , thanks google/youtube) Streaming video
b) Cacheable semi-dynamic content.

Then would it not be in our interest to push for cheaper / free inter-unrestricted APN traffic, and roll out our own cache heirarchies, ala: http://www.ircache.net/Tracker/ ?

Since CellC are the newest on the block, and seem to be most responsive to user demands, maybe we can push for something like a cache heirarchy?

But I will be honest:

What are you using most of your cap on as far as traffic is concerned?
2) Streaming video (youtube)
3) Standard dynamic content (Facebook etc)
4) Standard static (General surfing and so on)

Like 90% of the people out there (well perhaps youtube is used by 50% due to high bandwith requirements i.e. high costs) - you just CANNOT do youtube "lekker" on 384Kbps

I download everything from www.mirror.ac.za now use up those gigs and don't ask us in future what we use our bandwidth for as I won't disclose such information to anyone

Jeez, folks, I didn't realize it would be such a sensitive topic....
I probably should have set up an anonymous poll, so nobody's panties would get all bunched up, but I was hoping for some (constructive) feedback to use at my next meeting at CellC to motivate some sort of community caching solution.

Don't sweat it , I'll get the firewall and WAP gateway guys to send me some stats.

In the meantime, a mixture of laxative and castor oil might help if you ever want to get that stick out...

The summarize, it's probably worth setting up a transparent caching solution, improve the QOE for streaming and http. Community involvement in a heirarchy is probably pointless, but I might still argue for a subscriber - subscriber sibling proxy / ICP benefit
The p2p guys probably wont get throttled, but probably shouldn't be cached anyways due to uncertain legislation on storing protected content...
