Africa's harbour cities of Cape Town, Lagos and Alexandria are under threat from rising sea levels which could displace millions and cause massive economic losses, scientists said Wednesday.

Speaking at an international climate change conference in Cape Town, Geoff Brundrit of the Global Ocean Observing System in Africa said even a slight increase in sea levels could wreak havoc on some countries.

Can't we reuse sea water for other stuff?

Like, pump it in land to use with power stations or something.

LOL@myself

Thus, using it and EMPTYING the ocean? :D

Mmm, now there's a idea. Only problem is pump it where to? I mean the surface are of the sea is much much more than that of our little country :D :D :D

Dig a beeg hole in the kalahari somewhere, and pump it in there, the heat from the earth's core will heat it, and turn it into steam, which can be used in steam engines, to make power, thus helping Eksdom ook.

They've been saying that for dogs years. By the time the sea rises and swallows our homes it won't matter as we will all be safely inland behind high walls drinking our food through straws and getting wheeled around in those chair thingies.

I know, it could just be stored as masses of ice ... all you'd need to do is figure out how to cool the Earth's climate a couple degrees and this should happen on its own.

What power would u use to pump it with? There would have to be a big advantage for using it.. like power consumed << power generated. Isn't it also the reason koeberg reactor is on the coast?.. of cause the water temp in the immediate area also increased changing the natural ecosystem.

What would the harm be in pumping sea water into deserts?
Dunno.. you know.. if salt was profitable we could, after pumping sea water inland to the karoo create an artificial salt pan? :p ok.. smaller scale would be a salt evaporation pond..

But remember the water in the gran scheme things is not disappearing as such, it just changes to another form and comes down as e.g. rain elsewhere in the world which still runs into the ocean.

Another idea might be to, pending rock types and perhaps preparation of rocks, create artificial dams inland but not above ground but in unused mines.. of cause it depends on whats in the mines as you don't want a lot of polluted water either.. imagine we could create an artificial underground water source and pump lots of desalinated water in. :D No more evaporation problems too..

There's a large dam there IIRC somewhere around Graaff-Reinet that's bone dry. You could start there

EDIT: Sorry not the Kalahari the Karoo *facepalm*

I know about that dam yes, It was built on the wrong place - quite sad actually. Will be good if we could fill it up!
