It appears that sometimes Cape Town municipality can ditch sufficient load without having to go to the next stage.

Tonight while Eskom was on stage 2, Cape Town was on stage 1, all a little confusing!

John Matham spoke to the Eskom spokesperson this afternoon. Turns out that the City of Cape Town has some independent generation capacity which they used to generate sufficient load to keep their loadshedding on stage 1.

Joburg does this as well as they still have a functioning coal station.

That explains it.

Looks like Grid Watch needs to change their algorithm to use Cape Town's setting, rather than Eskom's, for Cape Town's alerts.

I see the Co-CT mis-spelled the name on its tweet: Its Steenbras pumped storage (not Steenberg).

I'm old enough to remember when it was constructed by the City of Cape Town in the late 1970s. Who would have thought it would be a small but vital piece of infrastructure in 2015, making the difference between stage 1 and stage 2 load shedding. LOL!

The nearby Rockview Dam was later contructed by Eskom as part of the Palmiet pumped storage scheme.

You need to choose CoCT or Eskom depending on your area in Grid Watch. Mine is accurate.

Interesting memories Gordon.

In the case of a search for Epping (Gunners Circle) the only options are :

Provider: Eskom Town: Tsantsabane Province: Northern Cape

Epping Forest (Epping Forest)
Provider: Eskom Town: City of Cape Town Province: Western Cape

Epping Industria 1 (Zone 09 (Pinelands, Langa & Epping))
Provider: City of Cape Town Town: City of Cape Town Province: Western Cape

Epping Industria 2 (Zone 09 (Pinelands, Langa & Epping))
Provider: City of Cape Town Town: City of Cape Town Province: Western Cape

The choice is "Zone 9" which was showing wrong time.

Was that Cape Town, Eskom or someone else?

Why would the City of Cape Town be filling up gennies in Krugersdorp? :)

I thought so too. Was trying to imagine when and where they could possibly have constructed a pumped storage scheme at Steenberg!

I've been inside. Huge machines. Was a school outing.

One of the largest cities in South Africa has what should be an insignificant 1970's technology coal station playing such a significant role. Interesting indeed. Something is extremely rotten in 2015 SA.

Pretoria also has two power stations but the residents don't have any advantage of them. They even get upgraded now with our budget but our mayor and tjommies reckons it's part of the grid for all to be enjoyed, especially the thieves and non-payers.
