Can someone please enlighten me as to how it is possible to have bumper to bumper traffic on a national highway from Paarden Eiland to Paarl !

Essentially it's a straight road all the way to the tunnel, no right hand off ramps - yet you can sit doing zero kph waiting for the traffic to edge forward.

I can't make any sense of it.

Krikey, is it really that bad?

And the number of lanes doesn't really change in that time either. I also don't get it.

ill tell u, driving on cape towns roads for years, like you, the amount of cars is too much for this city. only a few roads have had upgrades and extra lanes added, but they don't seem to be making much of a difference. Most highway turnoffs are still single lane, with major backups at those points.

thank god i work 10 minutes from home.

Lots of people going away for long weekend? Camping, up country, etc.

I have noticed that queue of traffic, essentially starting at Paarden Eiland. The only place they are working on the road is at the M5/N1 Bridge Intersection right at the start of the journey so why the hold up all along the highway then.

One can only put it down to excess vehicles on the road. What else can it be.

Cos you get retarded trucks/buses/taxis 10km down the road doing 40km/h trying to overtake another doing 39km/h.

It's the same every day - except for Friday when it starts an hour earlier.

How does bumper to bumper begin - does it start at the town end, or the other end....

congestion towards blaauwberg will be lowered with the IRT system.
The N1 has a train line running all the way to bellville station...but then you might be risking your life.

a lot of roadworks between stellenbosch and wellington turn offs, single lane but the bumper traffic starts closer to durbanville. Single lane exits with *******s trying to push in blocking their lane.

Getting out of town = M5
Tygerberg hill = Must be one of the WORST places on the N1. 3 Lanes with trucks in all of them :(
Brackenfell = Roadworks on R300
And please do not get me started on trucks trying to pass each other, yuck!!!!

10 years back it used to take me 10 minutes to get to work, now it is more like 35 minutes :(

Also many Lane Analysts on the road.
People who analyse the lanes to decide which lane is the fastest and keep changing until they get the best one.

I left for Wellington on the N1 from Century City yesterday at 3pm and the road was getting congested.

The 2 biggest reasons for yesterday's congestion is that plenty of people were heading out for the long weekend and also because of roadworks, leaving only one lane available just after the Engen1Stop service station before the Tygerberg Zoo turnoff.

Was doing 100kph just after Joostenberg Vlakte and came to a full stop about 500m before the Engen service station and crawled all the way till the next off ramp.

I opted to get off there and take the Old Wellington Road along the back - much more peaceful and scenic drive :)

I remember looking at the 9 (I think) levels of parking @ the Goue Akker and wondering just how many of the cars parked there were not only neighbours in parking, but actual residential neighbours as well.

If the licensing department made residential information available publicly, perhaps the parking company could inform people that somebody who lives 3 houses away from them also parks here and has the same arrival and leaving patterns.

But, making use of information is not something that should be considered by anybody except for criminals.

Yeah I totally agree and people in cape town are also rubber neckers and slow drivers.

It takes just one slow guy or one rubber necker to slow all the traffic down for miles.

What also adds to the problem is that there are too many slow moving trucks on CT's highways. I don't think CT was designed for so many trucks coming from other parts of the country. Trucks always slow traffic going up Plattekloof hill and then you get trucks trying to overtake eachother for miles on end and this really causes traffic jams and makes people in hurry to make up for time hence so many accidents that happen.

I sat for 90 mins yesterday on the section on the N1 alongside Paarden Eiland. They had CLOSED the N1 outbound between Koberg Interchange and Canal Walk. Without warning, or signposts. It was mad.

I was late for work on Saturday and my boss called me to find out 'where I am' and when I said I'm in traffic, I could tell he was thinking "he is talking so much ***!" haha.

Dunno what they doing, but they must get done already!

I'm never bloody late for work unless it's because of traffic!
