What they say

I know property prices is the main difference between the two and fuel, but what about the rest?

I dunno about some of those numbers: Toyota Corolla R20k more in JHB. Electricity price also looks a little suspect.

Things look more or less right to me.

On the electricity thing - I noticed on my colleagues bill that there was a +-R300 connection charge in JHB but not in Pta (Or I don't have it on my account) and Cpt(didn't have it from what I remember - everything was prepaid from what I remember). But I do think that JHB per KWh charge is less though.

If that rent difference is true ... then you can compensate the other costs of living solely on the rent savings

Ja a lot of those numbers don’t make sense.

Internet costs the same everywhere. New cars cost the same everywhere.

Franchise restaurants cost the same everywhere.

Also “Cape Town” and “Johannesburg” are two very large blanket terms.

Rent in the CBD vs rent on the outskirts is going to be massively different.

Brand new service charge in CPT of R150 as of 1 July.

Plus water charges being now eye-watering I doubt CPT is cheaper than JHB on the utilities for mid range homes. The story is: the middle classes were previously heavily subsidised by the high end. Then high consumption became impossible and/or illegal, and now the middle classes have to pay for themselves.

We'll have to wait for the DA's re-election to be unlikely. Then the middle class can expect treats again.

Yep very true. I moved house in ctn and my electricity bill is 1.5x what I paid before moving in. I'm about 10km from where I lived before, more upmarket area so now I'm getting shafted
