I go to a supermarket and fill up my trolley. Everything is rung up on the till and then my card is declined. So in front of a store full of people I have to leave without my shopping because I cant pay. NICE Capitec! (Capitec response, "It is your responsibility to check when our card expires")

I go to the branch to fix the issue. "Don't worry sir. We'll issue a renewal card." 25minutes later, "Here's your new card sir, just sign these 7 pages of Agreement that you have read and understand and accept our terms and conditions."

"So you want me to read these 7 pages, ask you about anything I don't understand, then sign to certify that I have read and do understand?"

"No you don't have to read the whole thing, just sign. This is a standard banking contract all of our customers sign it. Just sign it and you can get your card." (The following week I'm informed by senior Capitec manager, "I don't know what your problem is you have already signed the Agreement with your fingerprint. Stop being difficult!")

I really want access to my money because I have to buy food, petrol and pay bills. So what the Hell? Every Capitec client signs this agreement, how bad can it be?

On the last page, in big bold letters is one final sentence,
"... I certify that the printout correctly reflects the Agreement displayed to me on a computer screen ..."

I really want access to my money but I don't know how to "certify that a piece of paper correctly reflects a computer screen". Nobody in the branch can tell me how to do it, they phone for backup, still no answers.

Now I have a choice to perjure myself by falsely signing a legal document or go home with no money.

Go to Capitec and ask someone to show you the agreement on the screen/your profile (it's how they print the document in the first place, you might have signed it already by using your fingerprint) check to see they look the same and then sign the paper one.

Nice OP! Not sure why you want to blame Capitec for your own laziness.

They won't tell me WHY I need to certify that their document that they print with their systems is the same on screen and on paper.

WHY do I have to certify THEIR system?

so, one of the problems is that OP blames capitec for OP not knowing when his card expires, even though it's printed right on the card?

just WOW.

Pick your battles bro...

You are not certifying their system, you are simply acknowledging that what was printed for you to sign is as it was on the screen it was printed from i.e. that a mistake was not made.

Good lawda!

WHY do I have to certify THEIR system?

Are you being serious?

You are signing an agreement with a bank and you want to know WHY you should check that both the electronic copy and printed copy are the same?

I 100% do not believe that someone in senior management at Capitec used those words with you.

The info in the agreement, was on the screen. You are shown the screen and all details entered. It's not the wording you are certifying, it's the details you provided during your time with the consultant.

The irony here is that he would have had to sign the exact same form when he got the Capitec account in the first place!

So if you signed it then, then what is the problem now?

I experienced the same thing with my standard bank card 3 years ago, you know what I did? I simply went to the branch and collected my new card. I bought booze and laughed at myself for forgetting to check the expiry date of my card.

It happened to me at a very inconveient place.

The attended informed me that my garage card had expired after I had already filled up.

Contrary to banknofool's belief, I did not run to Standard Bank's branch and made a scene for a problem which came up because of my own negligence. Oh no, I did the unthinkable.

I called my wife to come pay while I was having a good time chatting with the attendants.

Nice guys, your "take home" from the OP is "You are responsible for your cards"

Firstly "the card remains the property of the bank", I only get to use it by their grace and T&Cs. Yes I could have been more aware BUT ...

Nobody seems concerned that I had to go all the way to the Office of CEO before a bank employee could tell me how to complete their Agreement.

Nobody seems concerned that many Capitec customers have signed the Agreement without truthfully completing the legal requirements of Reading, Understanding, Certifying and Accepting the Agreement. All of those customers have lied on a legal document and Capitec was well aware of that and seemingly OK with it.

I experienced a similar thing with Nedbank, except my card hadn't expired.. they were just summarily cancelling cards of the type I was using and not telling clients... I had an absolute **** fit on the phone and in the branch.....

Yes, me and many, many other Capitec clients. When someone puts your new card on the table and says "Just sign this quickly and you can be on your way. Or if you really want to you can read these 7 pages???".

Most normal people will feel very pressured to be on their way already. I did.

So?

Read it, then sign it...

That is what I really, really wanted to do but nobody in the branch or in the backoffice support could tell me "how" to do that.
I had a 7 page paper document and a doc on PC screen that I had to certify as identical. I didn't know how to do that.

The proxy-CEO eventually made a decision and she told me to sit with my finger on the paper and a finger on the screen and check all 7 pages for any discrepancies. If there were no differences then I should sign the paper document and take their card.
