Aircons shouldn't leak, they are a closed system, so if you require a re-gas you probably have a leak. Rather take it to an aircon specialist let them check it out. As you can get it re-gassed for R400 and it will leak out again and so on.

There's a R199 aircon re-gas on Groupon today.

But maybe get it checked for a leak first

+1 on take to a professional. Also cabin filters get choked with dust and fart particles and impede the operation. These filters are often hard to get to. Let the exports sort it out.

No they don't as there shouldn't be anyway for the gas to get out. It's almost the same type of system as your fridge, which also typically shouldn't need re-gassing. The only times I've ever had to re-gas an aircon is due to a fault, either the seals were perished, the pipe had a leak or something like that. The seals are known to perish if the aircon is not used, this is why you should use it even in winter for a bit.
