Doesn't stop us from using them for it unfortunately.
No it doesn't, mainly because that's the only transport people have. Like my wife wanted to use her Triber for the trip to Durban, I was like okay if your car can make it up Doreen road near us without an issue, than sure. Now this is a hill about 25 degrees and it goes for about a km like this so it's pretty stressing on smaller engined cars.
Yeah she now uses my Clio to go up that road :).

Honda Jazz 1.5 Sport.
They had great deals on new/demo units not so long ago

270k+ as a first car. Wow you people are privileged :X3:
I wouldn't buy new for a first time driver (or near that cost), as they're bound to ding it repeatedly.

Yeah considering my first car was 5k, was 14 years old and it's luxurious features was it had a heater and a side mirror :).

Out of the list I would also pick the Mazda 2, but for a girl and a new driver, I would definitely pick a used 500 auto or even a 500C. She will love you even more for that choice. Cheap to buy, has style and also a cabrio. Also pick the 1.2 or 1.4 so that it is much better in terms of reliability.

So I’m deciding to get a car for my daughter who just got her licence.
Needs to be auto.
New or demo

My options

1. Mazda 2
2. Toyota Yaris
3. Honda Jazz
4. Nissan Micra

So which has a good spec and maintenance plan/service plan for its value.

Hit me
I would also go for the Mazda 2.

As @Jchan11hk mentioned also consider the Fiat 500 and maybe the Opel Adam.

But I would consider used examples.

Mine was a 1995 Golf CTI 1.8 that I paid 25k for (2006)

In winter there wasn't a chance in hell that that thing would start in the mornings, so I had to park it on a bit of a slope outside my yard so I could kickstart it. Another feature it had was if I turned the steering wheel to the extreme the hooter would go off. Going into or out of a parking bays always got me stares

Maybe it's a vw thing?

Mine was a vw bakkie. Although diesel. The cylinder head was so warped you had to be rolling at about 50km/h before it would start though cause the compression was non-existent

That sounds better than my 1.3 Ford Meteor ;-). It had the advantage of a gear lever that disappeared when not in use, locks that could be opened with anything, an anti-theft system that was a switch under the steering that you flicked that just reconnected the starter.
I had the brakes fail on my while going down a hill, used the gears to slow down and get to a mac, master cylinder packed up. Car lost a hose somewhere for the air intake, easy fix I just plugged an old spark plug into that hole and it worked ever since.
Had to change the clutch plate, decided to do it myself, freaking cast iron transmission, took my 9 hours to replace that clutch plate, and while doing that didn't know I disconnected the throttle cable.
Than again the first car I bought myself though a lot better did have electric windows that decided to open themselves when they felt like it.

First car was the "facelifted" City Gold - 2006 model with the fancy dash. Went like a champ, no issues at all.

Not sure about spending ~R250k on a car for a new driver though.

Mazda2 or Honda Jazz.

Any specific reason why it has to be an automatic, though? You have way more options in the small car market if you include manual transmission vehicles. I would also go with a secondhand car (maybe 2 years old) - it will have the balance of the service plan and warranty.

Why? Is she restricted to driving vehicles with an automatic transmission?

She has her licence in manual and can drive manual. But auto is just more sensible esp since the price difference is not huge anymore.

I remember the days when autos were a premium luxury feature

If you're ruling out a bunch of less expensive cars because they're only offered in manual then that's not strictly true, is it?

I’ve resolved to buy a Japanese brand vehicle.

I’m not even sure if all my choices actually come in an auto

Ford Figo?

There are so many good cars on the market, it is quite a difficult choice.

What other family cars do you have, maybe reassign one of your cars?
