Hi everyone,

I'm hoping the accumulated knowledge of the forum users here can help to guide me in deciding on which cars to seriously look at, drive and from those ultimately buy.

I recently had someone drive into me. And insurance are calling my Corsa Lite a write-off. They are valuing the payout at R29k. For me a car is a grudge purchase as I would rather do other things with my money (travel, invest, entertainment, enjoy). I would like a bigger, safer and more modern car than before and something that I could drive for a long time with low running, insurance and other necessary costs.

I use the Gautrain to work so this car would mostly be for evenings, weekends, taking the highway to work when necessary and possibly a couple of longer holiday drives.

Since I want to get a decent and reliable car without financing, I have thought that R80k looks like an appropriate amount. A bit more if necessary and less if possible. Looking around, it seems like the following vehicles are in the running:

2008-2010 Jazz
2010 Mazda 3
2010-11 Fiesta
2010-11 Tiida
2009-10 i20
2010 Lancer
2010 Swift
2010 Auris
2010 Cerato
2011 Punto

This is based on this search: http://www.autotrader.co.za/radius/...05891&locationName=Sandton&latitude=-26.05447

There seem to be a fair number of Puntos around for reasonable prices. I know that they get a lot of hate here and Fiat servicing and parts gets lots of complaints. Outside SA (the UK), they seem to have a pretty good rep.

I'm thinking this pretty much is a list of cars to consider. If there are any others to add, please advise as well as definite no-nos. And also since I'm currently car-less (but uber is my friend), any suggestions on good dealers or private sales not too far from the Sandton area or Gautrain and bus-lines. I'd really appreciate your input. I don't want to waste my money and time.

Thanks :D

From that list give my 4 top options would be Jazz; 3; Fiesta; Auris (Oros).

Depends how NB is space for you; the Oros is heavily under rated; it's a competent; if what bland; car.

Why only American, Japanese, and Korean?

I would start by scratching Korean off the list, and adding German. :D

You can buy anything you want as long as its a Toyota Corolla. :D

I10 used ex rental goes for 89k
That's a option, otherwise look at a Mazda 2 or Ford ka

Am in a similar boat to you op ,
Car not getting fixed, no idea what's the issue, been more than 6 weeks with no car (2010 picanto)
So I'm also considering selling my car if and when i get it back
I'd check smd.co.za see if any nice bargins around

Would see what i get and work from there,
So about same as yourself,
Best car i seen so far is the rental Brio, but that's out of our budget:mad:

From the list, any of these would do - Honda Jazz, Mazda3, Kia Cerato.

I would Uber.

Thanks Raphael. I am considering that. I imagine that my current petrol and insurance combo is in the region of R1,200 per month. I think that to maintain my lifestyle on Uber would probably cost R2,500-3000 per month. Although this also means likely lifestyle changes and probably being a lot less social and spontaneous. I suppose this could be balanced against the R50k that I would put in additionally to replace my car with a newer, more expensive option. But does the 2 1/2 years or so (not adjusting for inflation) before that R50k has been spent via Uber justify the choice? I'd be interested to know your thinking on this?

^ is something wrong with that A3; it's seems a good deal under-valued & mileage is very low for a Jozi car...something seems fishy here IMO.

Mr PP do you agree?
