Car Number Plate Cloned. What to do now?

Hi all.

As per thread title. What to do?
I have proof that my car's number plate has been cloned. Same car make, same color. I've written a sworn affidavit at the local police station, however that doesn't stop the fines or e-toll bills from coming in.

I'm considering changing my car's registration and plates, however I'm still paying the car loan off, so that means the bank has the car registration papers which is needed for re-registration as far as I am aware.

Has anyone else done this before, and how? I know I'm not the only one.
Or should I not be concerned and just keep fighting any fines and e-toll bills that come my way? Or worse case, if a crime is committed with the vehicle having the cloned plates, I might be a suspect.

I would contact the bank which is financing the vehicle and inform them of the problem and ask them how you would go about re-registering the vehicle.

You don't wanna get locked up as a result of that vehicle being involved in a crime or being pulled over at a random road block- it's not worth taking the chance.

An easier option may be to get a personalised number plate

do people still do that? <--- Lame

Yes, if your plates aren't screwed in. Pretty easy to pop out a plate from a car that is the same as yours and not get fined. Unless you're pulled over and the police check the plate differs from the disc - Fraud

pretty sure you take your affidavit with to the etoll center and also AARTO and they will waiver those fees/fines.

Sigh, didn't read the post in full, assumed he was referring to people still cloning plates. Saw the damage is done so left it. You can see I never responded further... /facepalm

Once a month or...?

Yip obviously OP must do what needs to be done with the finance house etc. but as long as he is getting nailed with fines and etolls, then he must get them waivered, every single day if need be, or pay for them, however he wishes, his problem.

.

So how is that proof?

You could have taken a picture of your own car.

Thanks for all the replies. I think marlin178 is on to the best course of action. Thanks

That isn't the proof.

The proof is the photo of a car on a speeding fine. Ekurhuleni Metro Police department - who issued the fine - was kind enough to show me a higher resolution photograph. Even they could tell it's not me driving the car (they were very friendly in assisting btw). And since I'm the only driver of my car - unless it got stolen from my place of work and was driven 50km away to go speeding, and promptly returned afterwards - I think it's fair to say it wasn't me or my car.

So what I have is photographic evidence of someone - who isn't me - in a car same model as mine, with my number plate.

Okay that's fair game then.

I've just seen this go badly so many times before where people considered they had proof that didn't amount to anything at all actually.

Had the same issue with an ****** driving a white golf somewhere in Durban with the same plates as my red 1960's triumph spitfire convertible.

Although I did have fun writing letters to various traffic departments for speeding tickets of 160km/hr stating that it would be a bloody miracle if the car could reach that speed, and others pointing out the differences between say a white golf, and a red 1960's convertible (mostly the red red color), and pointing out that they were either incompetent or colorblind, in the end I changed the plate number.

Some **** recently cloned my plates, I see the most common solution is to change number plates.
Has anyone else had much success, what a ball ache to get this sorted. Or just ignore see if it continues..

I also have a fine with a totally different car and make...

“The sad part is that even if you go to the trouble of having your number plate officially changed, the cloned plate number will remain. Traffic fines will still link to your original number."

Does anyone know if this is true?
