Car Number Plate Cloned. What to do now?

Does anyone know if this is true?
I was told the same thing when we had our plate cloned in an area 45min away from home in Atlantis (small town of like 70 000 people). We got fine after fine. Eventually the only way to stop it was to drive to Atlantis and let both the police and the traffic police know about the issue. Took with us details of all the places (on a map) of where the car was getting fined according to the addresses on the tickets)

Didn't get fines after that, I assume the traffic cops eventually impounded the car or something the next time.

It amazes me that our traffic cops can't correlate license plate to vehicle make/model. All this technology at our disposal and they using 1950s methods.

The problem is that licence plate cloners (mostly) aren't stupid enough to clone a licence plate of a car or vehicle that is of a different type or model or colour. They often clone plates of a vehicle is that almost exactly the same spec in every way. This then becomes very problematic to prove that it is not in fact you driving your vehicle.

Only way is to mark your car/number plate with something only you know about and when this happens you have a completely independent way of proving your case.
And no don't ask me me how I have done it because that will compromise my security.

True - I can imagine that this would be an issue. Though in my case it was a completely different vehicle, my wife's car plate was cloned and put on a bakkie.

That might work but the problem is that the prosecutor will just say how do they know that you didn't add that mark AFTER the photo was taken.

What really needs to happen is that licence plate makers need much more regulation and control. It's pretty crazy how easy it is to get a pair of plates made up without any documentation at all. Some places don't ask for any documentation, or if they do, they just take a cursory glance at it and don't even check if the documentation is real or photocopied.

No, sorted. The details of what I did are lodged under an affidavit and on an independent record. And done when I bought the car.
