Earlier in August, Wheels24 interviewed South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) chairman, Bernard Hellberg Jr, to clarify how the South African Car of the year (CoTY) competition works.

Hellberg Jr also answered tough questions explaining why Porsche had won the award three years in a row.

The Guild's chairman revealed that the body would review the competition and implement rule changes.

Wheels24 can confirm that the SAGMJ has extensively reviewed the competition rules for the 2016 Car of the Year.

Hellberg Jr said: "After a process of consultation with our members, the motor industry and the sponsors, the guild has released the official rules for the 2016 competition."

"Guided by the Coty workshop held on May 4 2015, and the resolutions of the subsequent CoTY solutions sub-committee, the 2016 CoTY rules are the next step in the evolution of South Africa's oldest and most prestigious motoring award."

No matter what they change it too. Unless it says: No Porsche allowed. Porsche will win again

Theyve already guaranteed it :
Must evoke automative passion and excitement to make it a truly outstandin car both in its class, and in the whole market so that it is truly worthy of the ultimate accolade and the singular title of the "Wesbank/SAGMJ Car of the Year

Though I must admit the level of ego involved in this document is fekking hilarious... Since porsche have won 3 times in a row, nobody pays attention to which car wins anymore.. I doubt it impacts sales in any meaningful way anymore.

I just think it is very apt for it to take a Porsche to win the Elantra back in 2012.

So unfair for normal vehicles to compete against well designed and built cars. :p

Interesting (excuse the butchered formatting):
10.2 Each Jury member must score each Finalist against each category on a scale of one
(1) to ten (10), and will be required to submit this list electronically at the close of the
final evaluation day.
10.2.1. A Juror is allocated a maximum number of high scores and may not allocate:
 A 10 point score to more than 8 categories
 A 9 point score to more than 10 categories
 An 8 point score to more than 12 categories
10.2.2. A Juror is allocated a maximum number of low scores and may not allocate:
 A 1 point score to more than 8 categories
 A 2 point score to more than 10 categories
 A 3 point score to more than 12 categories
10.2.3. No more than 50% of available maximum scores (10 points) or minimum
scores (1 point) may be allocated to any single Finalist range

I actually had no issue with Porsche winning it the first two times, this last one was a bit suspicious.
Those Caymans and Boxsters, every review I've ever read - they don't just pip the competition, they kinda take em to the cleaners.

The rules on which the 1991 CotY was judged, should be used as the benchmark...

The categories:

Exterior Aesthetics
Interior Design & Practicality
Safety & Technology
Handling & Dynamics
Performance
Efficiency
Value for Money
Overall Excellence

So price is only 1/8th of the consideration. An expensive car will always win then.

Let's do the Polo Vivo vs. Ferrari LaFerrari:

Exterior Aesthetics Polo 1 Ferrari 10
Interior Design & Practicality Polo 3 Ferrari 3
Safety & Technology Polo 1 Ferrari 10
Handling & Dynamics Polo 1 Ferrari 10
Performance Polo 1 Ferrari 10
Efficiency Polo 5 Ferrari 2
Value for Money Polo 5 Ferrari 1
Overall Excellence Polo 2 Ferrari 10

Total scores: Polo 19 Ferrari 56

Winner: Ferrari!!! Yay!!

Someone just needs to start another car of the year competition that judges based on value for money

Another South African motoring institution with a typo in the name. Just like [-]CAR[/-] VAG magazine.

As always, the only significant year was 1991... every other year was just a waste of time.
