Car undertrays - how neccesary are they?

Back to the topic - I've removed my engine bay's undertray from my Corolla, and haven't seen any negative effects yet.
The manufacturer might have these in to help with making the car more streamlined, but in summer it restricts air flow and you might get overheating problems if it's not designed properly.
