Career or Family?

Everyone says "another job is gettable"

If you want to afford your family the best opportunities - I think some time and effort must be sacrificed.
Oh no I missed my childs soccer match, hold on I was working my butt off so I can put him through University.

Also in our climate - another job is not always gettable - unless you're all extrememly qualified and employable.

They're not exclusive- one then the other - establish yourself - then settle down

I think in most cases they are. Self-made rich families seem to have the most broken homes, with either the spouses not really liking each other or kids with horrible daddy issues. Something's gotta give.

Just my observation though.

Most definitely family. You may be loyal to your employer but when the **** hits the fan, do not expect that loyalty to be reciprocated. Show loyalty to your family and be there for them because they are or should be your anchor in life.

The most important thing is life is FAMILY.

+1. i would sacrifice family time or put career ahead of family (in many trivial sitations like missing a soccer match or even going overseas for extended periods) knowing that in the long run it is ALL done to benefit my family.

What is the difference between your family having a roof over their head - or sitting under a bridge eating cat food -

a job

Why cat food? A loaf of bread is cheaper than cat food.

Family first for sure.
Actually me first, then family, then work.

I had my first job for more than a decade but when they said they are moving to Cape Town I quit and found something else. Life simply is not long enough to waste on daily commutes of more than 45 minutes or traveling more than 20km.

Depends on how fast your traffic moves. I used to travel less than 10kms when I lived in JHB and it would take me near on an hour.

Why will no one answer my hypotheticals :(

@DrewChan I'd be most interested on your take on those situations given that you seem to be the strongest advocator for Work > Family (in the interest of a better life for family).

mooks I don't think it's that easy to answer those hypotheticals. A lot depends on the character of the individuals concerned.

Take a look at the calendar, a year only has twelve months in it. If you take an hour and a half to get to work and another hour and a half to get back, you might as well remove an entire month from your year because that is the amount of time you are spending in traffic.

I am a through and through family man. Work is rather meaningless in the long term. Family is what really matters. There was a book published recently by a frail care nurse in England I think who asked a lot of dying people what their regrets where and amoung men in particular there was a very common thread of "I wish I had spent less time in the office and more time with my family"

I don't plan on having that regret ever. In every one of your scenario's I would put my family first. Obviously as the sole bread winner keeping a job is essential to looking after your family so I would try to not risk my job but at the same time if I had a choice between an overseas promotion and being around family more I would give up the promotion.

Family first. Always.

I am self-employed and at times it is really tough to live by this motto. To give you an idea: it is exam time right now, so I spend a couple of hours each afternoon helping the kids with their work. Tonight, when they go to bed, I will return to my office to check the work submitted by my writers during the course of today. I also have a couple of submissions to make and something of my own to write for a certain client who won't allow anybody else to touch his requests. If I am lucky, I'll be in bed by midnight. But hey, at least I have that flexibility :)

Is it worth it? Yes. The kids grow up eventually and perhaps one day they too will put their families first; hopefully they won't be clocking beastly hours to make money for some company at the expense of their own families.
