Hi Buddha,

Why not post your request on this forum?...you'll probably get a better response.

This looks interesting tho'. It seems that CB is going to do something after all..

Good point, ...well here is the new topic!

-------------------------------------------------------------
Ok ppl...

Renegade Xpress has been asked if we would like to give our point of view (the small business) on the telkom ADSL problems etc etc...

I need to give them an answer on 12pm MONDAY 14th August 2005.

So I think I know what I would like to bring across with regards to the cost of ADSL to the SME's and other smaller companies.... but I need more and more importantly, I need some more views on the idea to be brought forward.

OK now b4 you guys go mad and start throwing poo around... ALL RESPONSES TO THIS NEED TO BE:

* Clean and PG13
* Well laid out and to the point
* About the concerns of ADSL in SA with regards to the small business
* in ENGLISH!

* Also think about the counters arguments that we need!!!(NB) ie... to justify facts, to put the ball back in their court...because the last thing we want is to be taken apart on TV!!! :eek: ;)

I'm very keen to see what we can come up with... and would like to take this to them. Please understand that there is a time constraint on this...so your quick thinking will be MUCH appreciated.

Contact me on my email address (or my cell if u know it) for more details or to lend a hand!!!

Come on PPL ... this could be GREAT for every1 involved!!!

get hold of ron holloway - aware smme campaign - check it out at www.aware.co.za

also if you trawl thru the ICASA adsl hearings submission there are plenty from the smme perspective...should be available on www.icasa.org.za and perhaps elsewhere on this forum if you search

something up with your site? cannot access it

basically i would say keep it as personal as possible - you probably do not have to come across as experts on adsl service provision and pricing; just say what you spend per month, problems you experience, prooblems you have heard from other smmes and how this affects your profitability and ability to maintain an smme; why is it important that you have affordable dsl?

add - and the obvious fact that your market is being limited as is e-commerce in general in SA

ic with permission for Buddah to gooi TelkoDemonopoly with a stone said:
for the micro-sized SMME, that cannot afford BusinessDSL512, but still needs a 24*7 internet connection, but could afford 384kbps or 192kbps, why does Telkomonopoly not offer these backward but less expensive options to SMMEs?
Please could you throw that baited question out into the broadcasting ether :).

The hook for TelkoDemonopoly is that they will have a wishy-washy answer - or likely none at all...anyways if worded correctly, it will highlight the fact that as much as some small businesses need speedy internet connectivity, they cannot afford BusinessDSL512, and as much as small businesses might be able to temporarily settle for and afford 384kbps or 192kbps - whilst ICASA is drafting its regulations to require that Telkomonopoly provides comparable to international xDSL, such small businesses are confronted with a Telkomonopoly that refuses to offer any BusinessDSL other than BusinessDSL512... Another issue, is that line conditions [copper quality or lack thereof, or distance from exchange] could mean that some potential or even existing BusinessDSL512 customers might never get up to 512kbits/s, but might be able to make do with 384kbps or 192kbps until Telkomonopoly gets their act together...Here is a screenshot that shows the following:
Another issue already in the ICASA report, and of relevance to small businesses, is that publically routable Static IP addresses are not available on TIPA accounts [Telkomonopoly Internet Powered by ADSL]...Static IP addresses have useful applications - mostly hosting of own website, hosting own email server, which if done & managed properly can save a small business a considerable amount of money that would otherwise go to hosting fees... Dynamic DNS is workable, but a hassle to setup, and it has some limitations for email hosting - e.g. one often ends up with being automatically assigned a dynamic IP address that has been listed as a source of spam - often entire ranges of IP addresses are listed e.g. on SpamHaus.org...

Yeah 512 was fast maybe 8 years ago. Business should have access to high speed connections at a price which won't ruin them before month 3 of being in business.

Maybe ask why it is that Telkomonopoly have not implemented or rolled-out ADSL2 or even ADSL2+, and say that there are reports that indicate that it can reduce operating cost for telecoms companies [i.e. for Telkomonopoly], it can work on lower quality copper lines, and it is faster than ordinary ADSL...why then is the max speed offered by Telkomonopoly 512kbps when ADSL2 offers up to 12Mbits/s if you are within 2.5km of the exchange, and lower speed the further away you are from the exchange...

Is it just that Telkomonopoly want to keep prices artificially inflated to create a demand with their legislated monopoly position, whilst keeping the country in the dark ages...

Ack - 12Mbps line rental would be a touch under R12,000/mo.. not bad for 1994.
