Pick n Pay has apologised to a woman from Mitchells Plain in Cape Town after she was arrested for "stealing" a bread roll worth less than R4.

The mother of two was arrested at a Pick n Pay outlet near her workplace on October 13, according to IOL.

The woman reportedly "nibbled" on the cheese roll priced at R3.99, while shopping and absent-mindedly placed the empty plastic wrapping in her pocket.

She was then apprehended by security officers after she had paid for other items.

I can see this being an honest slip of the mind(then again, people do take chances)... a simple 'don't forget that cheese roll you ate' from security when she was paying at the till would have been enough /shrug

I think the bullshit of using stuff before paying for it should really stop though.

It's not yours until you've paid for it, no matter what you think is right or wrong about the behaviour.

This must have been embarrassing for the lady and I do not think she deserved it. However I agree with @SauRoNZA , do not eat in the store before you have reached the till. I see kids doing it all the time and with shrinkage being a real problem in SA I'm sure guards are being told to be very strict, not their fault either.

But yes in this case, a little discretion from the store manager would have went a long way.

Here at my local Pick n Pay I have seen people open milk, yoghurt and many other food items to take a sip or bite and place it back again. Disgusting, and don't dare to say something about it... I have also noticed opened cereal boxes and so on at Food Lover's. Eeuw.

Yuck!

If it's really hot I'll drink a cold drink while waiting in line. When it's done it goes in the trolley and pay for it with the rest of my groceries. Never had a problem.

I would definitely say something about that and very loudly in the store so everyone can hear and then point the person out to the manager as a thief and a danger to whatever health and safety regulations the store has to abide by...

I have large signs at the entrance of the store stating that you are not allowed to eat or drink any products in the store....

This is a major headache for retailers...

That clears condoms :p

I point it out for the staff to resolve, whether they do something about it is up for them to decide. Pointing it out for the guilty party may end up confrontational and most importantly time-consuming, time which I necessarily don't have, been there done that. I want to shop and move on.

What I have noticed though, especially of food items with broken seals is that the items are moved to the front.

I suppose I shop in a large super Spar which is always busy.. Doubt a cretin would get confrontational since I would just loudly say something along the lines of 'I can't believe people like that think it'd OK to just open a product take some and put it back... That is disgusting.'..,would make the person very uncomfortable and they'd try leave quickly.

It is just too easy to steal stuff from SA stores. Everybody half asleep, including me. Left the store without paying for one of the clothing items. Only realised when I was half way down the mall corridor. Went back and paid. None of the staff had a clue. Would have been difficult to explain had anyone noticed. Does brain out to lunch count as a defence? Meh.

Yeah I agree. If you really want to drink it right now go and pay for it first then let security put a sticker on otherwise just wait. You are not going to die.

Hey this happened with my mum and I. I went along to do grocery shopping. We had something from the bakery on the back of the trolley where a child usually sit with our other shopping bags from other shops so it doesn't get squashed with the heavy stuff like cold drinks and sugar ect.. Paid for all the groceries and just before we exited the store I spotted the dough nuts between the cloths shopping bags. Ran to the express tills and paid for them.
