Yeah if those Thai boys can survive 2 weeks without food, I'm sure anyone can survive a short shopping trip.
You don't know. Maybe I've been 2 weeks without food up to that point :p

I believe everything has a bit of common senes. If there's even a remote chance you can't pay for the goods, don't consume it beforehand. Also if it's messy, don't open it. be courteous to other consumers and the store staff.

If someone takes a bite of droewors that they will buy, is it the end of the world?

Yuck!

If it's really hot I'll drink a cold drink while waiting in line. When it's done it goes in the trolley and pay for it with the rest of my groceries. Never had a problem.

This. I have done it quite a few times.

But taking something and using it and then putting it back? I have never seen this happen, but I would open my mouth about it.

Technically it's not yours til you paid for it so it's stealing. Equally grinding for me is meat and dairy products people just leave anywhere on the shelves. If you don't want something perishable just put it back on any cooler shelf.

It is just too easy to steal stuff from SA stores. Everybody half asleep, including me. Left the store without paying for one of the clothing items. Only realised when I was half way down the mall corridor. Went back and paid. None of the staff had a clue. Would have been difficult to explain had anyone noticed. Does brain out to lunch count as a defence? Meh.
Done that as well. Once walked out with a magazine and the store had just closed. Went to the security guard to let us in saying we accidentally walked out with it. Can't say it's stealing if you went back.

Hey this happened with my mum and I. I went along to do grocery shopping. We had something from the bakery on the back of the trolley where a child usually sit with our other shopping bags from other shops so it doesn't get squashed with the heavy stuff like cold drinks and sugar ect.. Paid for all the groceries and just before we exited the store I spotted the dough nuts between the cloths shopping bags. Ran to the express tills and paid for them.
That's unsanitary.

I suppose I shop in a large super Spar which is always busy.. Doubt a cretin would get confrontational since I would just loudly say something along the lines of 'I can't believe people like that think it'd OK to just open a product take some and put it back... That is disgusting.'..,would make the person very uncomfortable and they'd try leave quickly.

I love how you snipped my quote where I specifically said used common sense. It's not legal to consume alcohol in public, so figure that one out.

I "stole" a couple of pies from Spar a few months ago. This particular store has a back entrance so if you park at the back you end up paying at the tills near the main entrance and walking through the store with your purchases to leave. I went to the bakery, got a couple of pies walked past the tills with the intention of paying for them at the cigarette counter at the back entrance and somehow forgot to. I was about a km away when I realised what I'd done and turned around and went back and paid for them.

I have no idea how I would have explained that if I'd been stopped at the door or in the parking lot.

So, ja people have brain farts, although this woman could have avoided the situation by waiting a few minutes before eating the roll.

I highly doubt she absentmindedly ate a roll and then slipped the plastic in her pocket , most likely knew very well what she was doing and had no intention to pay and probably not the first time either.

I was 12, went to the shop to buy coke. Walk straight pass the till to the exit. Luckily just before walking out my brain kick in, I stop turn around walk to the till and pay.

I'm not convinced either way, but now that a precedent for giving people who do this the benefit of the doubt, people will do it intentionally no doubt.
