Cash-strapped TopTV heralds prepaid service

The problem with TopTV is that they are never going to be successful in South Africa until they convince the middle-classes that they are a viable alternative to DSTV. And they are never going to be a viable alternative to DSTV until they can get decent content for their channels.

Despite not being a subscriber any more (want rugby!), I really, really, really hope they can pull through. Pre-pad is an inspired strategy.

They sorely need live sports: Cricket, Tennis, Rugby and, of course, Soccer.

They're not going to get them. Multichoice owns the exclusive rights and I doubt they could afford the licenses even if Multichoice didn't. We have the best sports coverage on earth here in SA, and we pay relatively little for it compared to other countries. The benefit of DSTV being a monopoly is that you just need one satellite TV subscription to catch everything.

I think TopTV need better marketing. Seriously, I forget they even exist except for the few minutes I'm occasionally reading an article about them on MyBB, and in a few minutes from now I'll again forget they exist. I don't tihnk I've ever heard anyone talk about TopTV in a conversation. My friends/family/wife all haven't really heard of them either. If they get a new equity partner the first thing they should do is hire the Nandos ad agency to come up with some kick-ass viral marketing campaign or something, and take it from there.

I don't think they should should try be a 'better MultiChoice' unless they can really pull it off and get all the sports channels etc. (unlikely) .. rather aim for broader mid- and lower-end market + economies of scale. For that you need your name out there, and the product needs to 'feel like something tangible'.
