So his father was never a "garden boy", he worked at SA Railways and ended up as a Senior Induna (whatever that means), and unfortunately his mother died when he was 9 months old.

It would be the equivalent of a Senior Team Lead/ Department Head from what I can gather, so he would have had the vast majority of a yard/compound reporting to him.
