Cell C: Cancel Contract or Port to Prepaid

Woud it be better to cancel a contract or just port it to prepaid. It was a 24 month casualchat100 contract that expired in August.

I read somewhere that canceling requires a calender months notice, but if you convert to prepaid it happens immediately. I don't mind loosing the cell number since it was just used for free minutes & the phone.
