Cell C defaults on payments, gets downgraded to lowest junk rating

No suprise there how this company manages to operate is beyond me.

“Frost & Sullivan believes that the S&P downgrade will further hamper the restructuring of Cell-C, prolonging the ailing MNO’s liquidity flows. Cell-C could see the decision to downgrade reversed in the medium term, as restructuring will be expected to conclude. An expected recovery in the commodities market should see the Rand strengthen and lead to price reductions by the MNO in the medium to long term; this will aid in preventing customer churn, whilst attracting new consumers to Cell-C.” - Mauritz Venter, ICT Research Analyst, Frost & Sullivan Africa

“Uncertainty around spectrum allocation however will impact the way forward for Cell C, in terms of monetary value of spectrum, and its transferability in the acquisition which, most likely, may be opposed by ICASA.”- Naila Govan-Vassen, ICT Senior Industry Analyst, Frost & Sullivan Africa

This makes their selling price very low and someone like Orange might wake up to the news!

The price you pay might be low, but you are also buying all their debt, which is pretty damn high. Failing to honour their debts comes as no surprise though, things have always seemed a bit shady in the upper echelons of Cell C and I wouldn't be surprised of large sums of money were being snuck out the back door into someones offshore bank account.

Orange actually audited Cell C a few years back and refused to buy because of the debt and seeing no upside on Cell C's market positioning.

The money spent on those ideas is money found behind your couch compared to the capital they would need to spend to fix their network.

Easy buyout for Vodacom to become the all time powerhouse in the SA market since MTN is also on the ropes, unfortunately government will never allow it.

Unfortunately? I wouldn't want Vodacom taking over Cell C. 4 operators can work fine in our market.
