Cell C-Facebook deal coming soon

FB consumes a lot of data - if it is zero-rated Facebook access, great stuff, should help a lot younger folk with their data bills.

Then on the other hand...you'll always find them there; out goes the learning new stuff, technology, hobbies etc.

"With Internet.org, Facebook is partnering with various wireless carriers and other organizations to provide an app that offers free access to certain internet services, including Facebook, on mobile phones in developing countries. But this spring, a group of publishers in India pulled out of the program, saying it violated the principles of net neutrality—the notion that internet providers should treat all online services equally."

Is it me or is Cell-C focusing more on offering bells and whistles and neglecting the primary purpose of telecommunications - communication (which requires an in-order network)

Cant compete with the big guys on just communication alone. So they trying to lure people with bells and whistles.

Probably a chicken and egg scenario - they need more people to fix the network, but if they dont fix the network they wont get more people.

Why would they have to do a deal with Facebook to do this though? They just simply have to zero-rate traffic to Facebook on their network, it has nothing to do with Facebook.

Propably looking for Facebook to give some kind of subsidy for the data usage?

"Internet.org Is Not Neutral, Not Secure, and Not the Internet" : https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/05/internetorg-not-neutral-not-secure-and-not-internet

This kind of thing is generally a bad idea. It limits and locks in people, rather than giving them more options. The same can be said for free WhatsApp access. Read the above link and think about it a bit. It's the opposite of a free, open internet, and moving away from that is very dangerous in the long run. We have to be making more noise about this and educating consumers (and voters) about what a good thing choice is, and how they should have the right to exercise choice. I hardly ever see local media even mentioning the issue of neutrality on the internet, never mind grasp that these seemingly "positive" actions by companies are actually very bad in the long run.

Interesting and I might read it later, but posting links for people to read is probably not the way to start "educating consumers and voters."
If the links the contain words like "eff" and "deeplinks", I become very suspicious! :wtf:
