Big surprise for Vodacom

MyBroadband Insights has released its Q1 2025 Mobile Network Quality Report, which shows that Cell C has overtaken Vodacom to become the second-best network in South Africa.

MTN still has the best mobile network in South Africa, while Vodacom is the only operator whose overall network quality score has decreased since last quarter.

Vodacom has cut back on capex to enable them to pay for the innovative Please Call Me, which was actually a zero balance miss call idea

I find CellC's voice quality good

What is lacking is the call centre. Prompts change and often do not lead anywhere. A prompt to press "9" to speak to a human simply repeats the menu, so you don't get anywhere

Getting an eSIM required visits to 2 stores. Kenilworth Centre did not know how to do it. Tokai branch managed it, but after 45 mins of trial and error

On the other hand, MTN Kenilworth Centre managed an eSIM in 10 mins

I guess this implies Cell C is roaming on MTN most of the time?

I am thinking of porting my Vodacom number to Capitec which I understand uses the Cell C network. Capitec has cheaper date, it seems.

Good or bad idea?

Wow. Must have been a big turn-around. I ditched Cell C a year ago because its network was essentially disfunctional. Could often not get any reception or had 2G voice service and no data service in the middle of Cape Town. And now second best...

I have to try at least twice in order to connect a call, with the first time just disconnecting after a while. Sometimes I have to retry twice. I also have the same issue with people trying to phone me. Happens on different phones.

I don't want to port as I've heard of people losing their numbers in the process when porting from Cell C.

If your phone can use an eSIM. you can retain Vodacom for voice and add a CellC eSIM for data

I use an MTN eSIM as the (iPhone 14) can use 5G which is considerably faster than LTE

So from the 6999 users, 9 of them were on Cell C. At least one good thing for a dead provider.

1000 MTN users got 100 Mbps, 2000 Vodacom users got 80 Mbps, 1 Cell user got 90 Mbps.

Cell C is second best.
