Heard this in 702 this morning and on Twitter.

Cell-C retrenched a whole lot of middle management yesterday (the rumour is that they will be replaced with ex-Vodacom employees).

They were also allegedly given no package. By 8 pm last night their cellphone accounts and company petrol cards were canceled.

Such a sad call, heartbreaking @RediTlhabi speaking to sobbing caller & family member of the retrenched CellC employee who committed suicide

Can't find anything in the press reports yet.

Many of the Callers in to the Radio said they would be canceling their Cell-C contracts if this is true.

A company should not be allowed to treat their employees like this... not in this day and age.

One manager of a large Petroleum related business said they would be canceling all their Cell-C business contracts.

Talk about the worst form of advertising out there.

I do hope this isn't true. Is this the price of cheaper tarrifs in SA?

But isn't middle management usually redundant anyway?

(wouldn't want to be them)

I seriously doubt they were given no package. That's illegal.

Middle management is not redundant. Not every company can function with a wide span of management and flat structure.

That makes no sense, you cant retrench someone without a package and you cant hire a replacement for a position which was retrenched strait away.

1) Nobody has been retrenched yet, all news reports I've seen say only talks have started this week (which is exactly what the law requires before retrenchment)
2) That makes the statement of them not getting a package completely untrue
3) As harsh as it is, linking the suicide to a not yet happened retrenchement is tenuous at best

Sensationalism ftw

Cell-C ordered to halt retrenchments.

http://www.ewn.co.za/2012/06/01/Cell C ordered to halt retrenchments.aspx

JOHANNESBURG - Trade union Solidarity on Thursday called on Cell C to stop retrenching staff, after an employee committed suicide this week.
The union said it had been speaking to the man's family who believe that he was pushed over the edge by the possibility of losing his job.
Cell C vehemently denied the employee was officially told he would be retrenched.
An estimated 150 people stand to lose their jobs as the company moves to streamline its business.
"We are dealing with people's lives here," warned Solidarity's Marius Croucamp.
"There's a delicate way that one has to deal with this kind of restructuring in a big company."
"We cannot give people this kind of message on a Friday when they're about to knock off for the weekend."
On Thursday it was reported that Cell C was busy with a process of consultations which could lead to retrenchments.
The company said it was overstaffed in many areas and in order to streamline the business and make it more competitive a new process had to be implemented.
The company announced last week that its majority shareholder, a Dubai-based company, is injecting about R1,5 billion.
The funding will be used to support the company's plans, which include improving the quality and coverage of its cellular network.
Meanwhile, a close friend of the man who committed suicide said family and friends were left devastated by his death.
Johan Marx said his close friend Andre Ankiewicz gave everything to the company.
"He put effort in, he put in blood, sweat and tears, hi over time. He took time away from his family because of loyalty to the company.
At age 51 they take all of that away from you with one letter and they call it good business practice"

Hmmm, then why would they cut off their cellphone contract and Petro Cards on the last day of the month? ;)

A lady I work with's husband works for cell c and he has already received his retrenchment letter. Also heard about the suicide on Wednesday from her. Very sad state of affairs - surely there should be a counsellor present for these types of things?

My only gripe with this is that there's been no reports of substantial retrenchment packages etc.

He will have received a section 189A notice that a restructure is pending and that his position MAY be affected. This STARTS the consultation process
Until the consultation process is complete, nothing is finalised.

Fair enough - but how willing are you to do your job after receiving any form of letter stating that you may be jobless in the next few weeks?

Everyone has to be notified that they could be potentially retrenched a few month ahead of the time, counsellors would also be offered.

Then they would go through the process of identifying who is no longer a good match for the new structure and they would be retrenched and receive the necessary package.

Its a really crappy thing to go through but its really fair if the proper processes are followed.

What you can do sometimes is look for a new job then take voluntary retrenchment and receive some free money.

Its really unfortunate that this guy took his own life before even trying other avenues...

Well, the Cellphone account and Petro Card have been pretty much finalised.

The Widow of the man who committed suicide is trying to arrange her husband's funeral and she can't drive anywhere or use his cellphone to make calls.

Why would she need his company petrol card to drive around? Surely that should only be used for work purposes. Maybe only his accounts were cut because he is no longer alive. Will see if I hear about anyone else's accounts being cut.
