Cell C won't compete on price – CEO

Cell C will not get into a price war to gain a competitive edge over Vodacom and MTN and would rather focus on customer service and innovative products.

This is the view of Cell C CEO Douglas Craigie Stevenson, who was speaking to The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield about the company’s latest financial results.

Craigie Stevenson said “[lower prices] just destroy value and take away operator’s ability to roll out infrastructure of any kind”.

Just how often does he expect us to have to contact Cell C to enjoy this good customer service? The less people have to get even customer service, the better.

What are these innovative products?

You already do? Grabbed a 50gb bundle for R500 a few days ago. Cheap as chips compared to Vodacom's 1gig for R150.

If you don't mind a month to month deal, Axxess / Afrihost have that beat. Their Telkom deals start at R99 for 10gb and get cheaper on bigger deals.

So Cell C will be increasing their price per Megabyte?

Is that what the CEO of Cell C just said?

If they jack up their service, and can make a good value proposition, then good for them.

You can't compete on service. If the price advantage is gone I'm gone. They cancelled all their really innovative products. Might be gone in any case come March depending on what Telkom offers.

I don't care how good the price is at Telkom, I am not interested. Not had issues with Cell-C over last 20 years, tho they might not be the greatest. My SO likes them, and they never gave me grief.

Cannot say the same for Telkom. Not much to choose between Vodacom and MTN, to be honest.

Cellc's Voice:66cents/minute per second billing and 50G@R500.00 valid for 180 days is the best prepaid plan I know at the moment. I don't expect anything cheaper than that. Where I live all networks have issues (Vodacom is the worst) so quality is not a differentiator.

It's not because of issues that I'm with Cell C but because of the price. If the 50GB for R500 disappears then so do I. If Telkom offers me more value at a better price I'll jump as the service has always been good. I might anyway with their R199 offer as it only works out slightly more and provides a lot more value.

Cell C hasn't had any innovation in the last 7 or so years.

Cell C doesn't have their own towers anymore?
They haven't had their own towers for years. They still have their own base stations but are transitioning to fully roaming on MTN.
